C8 security wheel bolt removal

Post by geoffarm »

Despite my asking the local National Tyre depot to only tighten the wheel bolts to the correct torque and to take care with the security bolts I found myself in a situation where the security bolts on 2 wheels would not undo due to the rounding off of the holes in the bolt by use of too much force.

Not wanting to have to pay for the removal I came up with a method of removing the bolt that worked for me. This method should work in most cases and is certainly worth a try as a first pass.

It works by positioning the wheel with the damaged nut close enough to a wall so that you can get the standard C8 scissor jack in a position to exert a force directly on the socket and ratchet or bar used to undo the bolt. See the image below.
Don't be afraid of exerting too much pressure as the flex in the tyres will stop any damage.

I replaced the original Citroen bolts with these McGuard bolts

Well done, that man. I would suggest that, in future, when you have to get work done on the wheels, remove the security bolts first (and, if they point this out to you, explain that you are fed up with people overtightening them!). So long as the main bolts are tightened properly it should not be an issue.
