C5 tailgate that can't keep it up

Unread post by wurlycorner »

Common problem.

I'm now (-expletive removed-) off to the back teeth with being hit on the back while rummaging in the boot. :x :grr: :taz: :gt: :mecker:

The prop isn't that expensive (£68 incl. VAT)

Haynes avoids the job because they're too scared to touch the headlining  Headlining removal doesn't look any more difficult than any other car I've worked on, going on the parts diagram.

Has anyone done the job of replacing the ram?
Difficult?
How far did you have to go along the headlining to gain the access you need?
Any tips/things I will need that I might not think of before starting dismantling?
How is the strut actually attached at each end?

Does the glass strut literally only work on the glass, or do they both come into play for holding the tailgate open? (i.e. do I need to replace both, or just the tailgate one)?

Thanks

I can't help with the fitting details but have you checked this company for gas struts? http://www.sgs-engineering.com/

Several forum members have reported friendly/knowledgeable service and much cheaper than main dealers for a good quality strut.

Don't know about whether both are required, but given the hassle of getting to them, I'd replace all 4!!

No idea about the headlining, although I think it was discussed before, and ISTR that it was possible without a full removal....

8-)
Doesn't sound so bad then :-D
4 bloody struts though
Plus I will have to stop being lazy and attend to the rear glass not opening as well

And well done on the link to cheaper struts 8-) 8-)

Thanks.

It might take me a little while to get round to it, but it's on the 'to do' list now (moved from the 'too difficult' list and slightly higher priority than the 'when I get round to it' list)...

It is possible that the switch for the rear glass lock switch has had water get into it. I had to open mine (to replace the mounting plate, as some prat had epoxied it, locking the wiper spindle!), and I found that when I nipped the switch off and striped the wires back, one was blacked through water damage. Cleaned the wires up, and the glass then opened. Unfortunately the replacement weird lump of plastic (with switch incorporated; you cannot buy them separately) was about £40! Stock code 6405 K3 (and was available within the last 6 months).

The last time I checked I couldn't find anyone with the correct struts so have a suitable length broom handle in the back. If you see anyone offering estate struts double check that they are.
