Hi all the tacho on my early mk1 sinker TD is inoperable - never a flicker from the needle. I know it's a common failure on the series one as my previous mk1 TD Charlie Brown had the same issue. I see no mention of the tacho in the Haynes book but it's ready to remove the sender so it's out for looks. It measures no resistance or continuity between any of the 3 pins. With no spec available not sure what to expect but would have thought there would be signal to- from and earth. Anyway there's no sign of a part number on it either.
Can anyone help with id for this part? Pictures to follow later. Or I'd anyone has spare sender available if be keen!
It's quite difficult not to over rev the engine with loud heavy metal from the stereo!!

Re: Xantia rev counter mk1
It's the crank/flywheel sensor isn't it? If theres no readings from it then it'll be dead, as the only other issue is the one mine has where it dies periodically due to being fitting wonky/dodgy wiring!
I'll get citroens part number on it for you
Edit: 5918 94, listed as TDC sensor but more commonly known as crank sensor. Seems to be pretty common across the board

Re: Xantia rev counter mk1
It is common item.. be carefull when refitting it.. you CAN have it in too far and the flywheel batters the end of the sensor... what I do is while the car is on ramps I have the engine running and I gently tap it in untill the rev counter wakes up... then tighten the clamp.

Re: Xantia rev counter mk1
Suprised there isn't a spacer (like the ABS sensors) that stops it going too far

Re: Xantia rev counter mk1
Yes, this one has a brown plug - looks like this:

and now I come to think of it I think it is the same as the TDC sensor from my previous XM SEi Turbo.. and I replaced that sensor .. but did I keep the removed one ? I do not recall..
Thanks for the part number!!
Yes, I refitted it anyway and was aware of the clearance to the flywheel issue. On the Xantia TD manual you can actually see the clearance if you shine a light directly up and look straight up at the exposed bit of flywheel - you can see the sensor protruding. I set it to about 1mm from the flywheel but still no effect on the rev counter.

Re: Xantia rev counter mk1
For some reason, I thought the S1's tacho sender/sensor was NFP. Am I wrong?

I also thought so. But just like the ABS sensors, sometimes something can be sorted out..
