C5 X7 - hope this is not pointing to a problem

Post by rmunns »

I've had this C5 2.0 Hdi 160 (2010) for a few days. I've just noticed, under the bonnet, something odd.
On the left hand side, between the washer bottle and the coolant tank, is the tank holding the suspension fluid. Out of the rear of this tank, heading towards the bulkhead, there is a ~3" long hose that is just stopped off with a bolt stuffed inside, jubileed. What is this pipe supposed to do? Is the fact that it's been blocked off a pointer to a problem that has been 'cured'?

BTW, I gather that people know this model as an X7? Is that right? (2010 C5 excl.).

At a guess, the tank has been replaced with one intended for a different model. Am I right in thinking that there was a batch of split, leaky tanks around that time? As long as the hydraulics work OK , I doubt that it's a problem.

If it's original, it's very odd that the pipe is stopped with a bolt.
As provision for some alternative arrangement I can believe, but surely there would be a 'proper' cap on it?
I'm sticking with a possible replacement tank; perhaps there were no direct replacements available due to the splitting problem, and this was the recommended dealer stopgap provision.

Shockingly gash solution, if that is indeed the 'official' recommended fix!

Shouldn't worry about it. If the suspension is working and there are no leaks ,what's to worry about.
Plugging hoses with a bolt has been happening since the days of the "sit up and beg" Ford Prefect. It's probably as efficient as a fancy and expensive specialist cap or plug, and easily fitted or removed.

Yes, my point though was that it's not what you would/should expect from a manufacturer as a designed solution.

Can't see where it say's anywhere on this thread that it was in any way an official manufacturer designed solution.

No you're right, that hasn't been confirmed, but it was noted that this has been seen on several C5's and it was suggested that was the recommended dealer fix. Which is why my comment said "Shockingly gash solution, if that is indeed the 'official' recommended fix!"

I'm not sure what the issue is here...

No problem. I just thought you might have misread the above post.
