I had a chat with him, basically wants 13k.
I asked some pertinent questions in plain English which were ignored.
I did however get this lovely response.

Hi elma and many thanks for your interest.

This 1982 CX Series 1 Prestige is a worldwide rarity in this colour and is undergoing a full professional restoration, we are replacing new panels, glass, new original headlights, new rear door, bare metal respray on the bonnet and front wings, a full respray in the original factory colour, reconditioned starter, alternator, new spheres, ignition system, new Michelin tyres, re-Connollised leather interior, new headlining, as well as the usual service attention - ie, weeks of work by 3 full-time tradesmen. It will be a show-stopper when finished, I will be asking £12795 but can negotiate downwards including free delivery if required. There will not be another Prestige like it in the UK, possibly worldwide.

As you know the only models worth investing in are the Prestige or Prestige Turbo, which if professionally restored are now rocketing in value as the DS did some years ago.

Many thanks

Steve

I'm not interested anymore. Replacing what looks like perfectly decent original bits isn't my thing. Paying for a restoration that hasn't been done seems dubious too. I'm mortified that the prestige is the only model worth investing in, I'll give up saving for a gti.

Ay up!

I'd hang on for a GTi turbo meself.

He sounds like a rip-off merchant to me........

Yep, that's the car I was talking about.
I have had a sensible/polite reply from him now, but as above, I think he has his head in astronomical asking price territory. Good luck to him if he can sell it for that (I'm all for the value of them going up ) but I think he'll be in for a long wait.
(he'll have to get his initial response language slightly fine tuned, as well!!! )

And yep, much as I like that engine and prestige's are obviously special, tbh I think a turbo model will always command excellent money and sell lore easily...

I wasn't really considering it, thread just got me wondering the price. Gti turbo is where my hearts at, no silly ads going to change it.

Prity gobsmaccked that the buyer is expected to commission a resto, which doesn't look entirely necessary and they don't even get to choose the colour. I think possibly this guys expections and expertise aren't quite reality based and this CX will be rotting in his shed for some time. Sad really, thats a car that deserves some love.

It is a bit weird though, he sold a t2 gti2 for £1300 a while back. I'm sure he knows the true values. Its not going anywhere at that price and deal though. He needs to put a realistic price on and ditch the rest or do the rest and readvertise it.

I can see the potential for piggybacking your own resto work onto the cost paid by a client. Buyer pays a sum that includes bodyshop work of a lesser value than claimed, so the vendor can either satisfy an existing bill or have another car slipped through on the same tab.

Blimey - did no one notice the augmented photographs? Look closely at the pictures - there's some pretty dishonest and ill- applied photoshop colour flood filling done to them. Presumably to make it look better than it presently is. Not sure but I'd think ebay would have rules on augmenting a photo of something for sale no?

I do not think so, just the colour blocking out in a low quality jpeg/till
