Funny way to sell a car (CX on ebay)...

Unread post by wurlycorner »

I'm sure some of you have seen the Prestige on ebay.

It was originally listed as an auction with a buy it now price of 99p - which I assumed was obviously a mistake and it would be pointless anyone doing the BIN because it would only end up as a protracted argument escalated to eBay - no-one comes out a winner, so why bother starting it!

Evidently a few people either did try it, or contacted the guy though because it resulted in the price then being changed to £1m and correctly listed as a classified ad, with a sarky statement at the bottom of the listing...
:? ok mate, chill - it was your mistake! No need to go giving the rest of the world a hard time, surely?

Anyway, what I didn't get was the whole "it's a classified ad" but "price on application". I also was genuinely interested to see how much the guy really did want for it - it might have been a bargain and I would like a 2.4EFI (my dads favourite CX was a Manual Pallas 2.4 EFI that he had when I was young, so I have a soft spot for that engine :oops: ).

So I dropped him a message;
Hi, if it's a classified ad, why not put the price in the ad? What is all this 'price on application' all about?!
This was the response I got back;
"Price":

noun, \?pr?s\
: the amount of money that you pay for something or that something costs

: the thing that is lost, damaged, or given up in order to get or do something

: the amount of money needed to persuade someone to do something

"On":

preposition, \??n, ?än\
: touching and being supported by the top surface of (something)

: to a position that is supported by (something)

—used to indicate the part or object by which someone or something is supported

"Application":

noun, ap·pli·ca·tion \?a-pl?-?k?-sh?n\

1
: an act of applying:
a (1) : an act of putting to use <application of new techniques> (2) : a use to which something is put <new applications for old remedies> (3) : a program (as a word processor or a spreadsheet) that performs one of the major tasks for which a computer is used
b : an act of administering or superposing <application of paint to a house>
c : assiduous attention <succeeds by application to her studies>
2
a : request, petition <an application for financial aid>
b : a form used in making a request

I sincerely hope this helps you understand, there are also on-line courses in the English language you may wish to consider.
Err, right. Ok... :roll:
With hindsight maybe I worded my question a little bluntly - I just happened to write it in a hurry on the train. But anyway, great way of encouraging a potential buyer that was just asking a straight forward question, eh?!
It did get my hackles up though - the last comment particularly. So I replied, thinking it might give him a clue that both the tone of his ad and his response wasn't going to do him much luck in selling the car.
I sincerely hope you get a lot better at trying to sell cars then, because this is one avid car collector (15 at the moment, including 6 CXs) that sure as hell won't be dealing with someone like you!
Apparently though, I'm the one being rude?!
It is my choice to put POA on an advert, you come on demanding an explanation for that, saying I should be putting a price on the ad, when it is entirely my choice. It sounds like I am the lucky one that my reply has prompted your decision never to annoy me again! There are lots of genuine people who phone or e-mail without your rudeness and if it continues I will report you to eBay.
And erm yep - obviously it's unreasonable to expect the price of something that's for sale, to be included in the advert huh? :roll: :?

Anyway, putting this up so if there is anyone else on here that might be interested in the car, they can make their own mind up before contacting him as to whether it's someone you might like to deal with...

In my experience POA = absurdly high price so I never bother when I see POA on an advert for anything.

Doesn't POA stand for P155 Off, Arsewhole? (deliberate mis-spelling to bypass the filters).

Something is not quite right; you can't sell a car and include a quality respray in the sale price but come out ahead of how much it would have been worth unpainted. Spend more, increase risk, reduce originality. Patina is worth dollars in the serious collector market.

I've got enough cars to last me a while, it's unlikely I would buy a CX. And certainly not a UK car due to rust concerns. :)

Well, he thinks he is!

I love the CX myself, the 2nd car I noticed. the 1st? An E-Type. The CX is more realistic. Pity that CX diesel was such a shed while the search that turned up Otterchops was on......

And he wanted £750 for summat in need of total restoration!

He originally had this S2 for sale on Car and Classic and Ebay for £6k after touting it around at £7k. He offered it to me for £6250 back in February.

This one, I am reliably informed, he sold before February, so why he has it back now I don't know.

Apparently both cars used to belong to an elderly gent in the CCC, his son was trying to move them on to like minded Citroen folk, and for not a lot of money either.
