Re: new project brought
good old parts washer Jim .. arguably the most useful £30 I have ever spent second hand. (plus the Jizer)
I was working away under car tonight, getting sump face clean etc.. and finally dragged the oil strainer off...
about 2 teaspoons of suspected metal, fairly soft, haven't been able to look in any detail.. but bearing (no pun) in mind how much engine is left together, I can only think oil pump or big ends or mains maybe..
what should I do? cant really turn the crank as nothing holding liners, liners cant be bolted down without putting oil rail back (it takes all 10 through-bolts)
I may be able to get the big end caps off as it stands..
is it normal for shells to wear into a hundred pieces and collect in the sump gauze? I guess they will go somewhere...
edit ...
took another look at them.. they are not silver but black.. .. and very soft..
I have no magnet here, but I don't think they are metal

ah I Made some SF, from a long box spanner thing I had.. they work well, only need 3.. at 110mm each and the spanner was 330 !
I think its all ok, I am now going to look jealously at a bore protrusion of 0.08mm on that posting

Re: new project brought
all coming back together.. decided not to use uprated oil rail within the sump.. decided to bin the MLS gasket and opt for a singe layer payen..
with some luck she may run this weekend..
whilst under there just now saw a hideous rear subframe bush.. I have never owned a car with as few a miles as this, shocking.. will grab a pic tomorrow..
the 10 long through bolts.. a couple of them don't protrude as much as the others, at the bottom... I am praying this is a manufacturing error.. they were all tightened as per spec :O

Re: new project brought
thanks Jim,
maybe Sunday
will throw a bottle of prosecco at her is she runs ok
I have enjoyed the job so far.. steady winter project work.. whatever the outcome..
was a bit shocker earlier when I noticed the rear metro subframe (it has two of the pests) and wondered if all the work of reconnecting to get her to run, would have to be undone to pull the shell off the sub in a few days!
still a strong possibility..

Re: new project brought
well well
weekend before last saw the engine start, and run
then a break, and some more work in the evenings last week, and she was ready for her first journey in my ownership, to the mot yesterday at noon.
passed perfectly..
then 100 miles of blatting about around these parts.
cornering is something else, compared to my c5 and anything I have ever owned really.. a good fun car this one
no problems to report ..

Excellent news John! I hope we get a good spring and summer for you to enjoy it in. The fun that cars like this (MGF/TF,MX5, MR2 mk3 etc) is vastly misunderstood by those who haven't tried it

Re: new project brought
I do believe that John's MGF would leave a (standard) big Healey trailing in it's dust
The B was s**t though. Horrible thing.
