Can't say about the diesel Xsara. The 1.6 VTR I have has a sump plug that is 24mm nut with an 8mm Square hole in the middle. I've got a socket that I made up that you can put on the nut then put an 8mm piece of square in the middle of and undo. Also has the (Dowty type seal) rubber seal / washer not the copper crush type. This set up was the same on my old ZX TD on an 'L' 94 reg.

Doh, just been in to gsf in manchester to buy my bits (air/oil/fuel filter etc) and asked if they had any thing that would fit in the round sump plug with square hole so they gave me this little kit- with square bits, about 13quid with the VAT. So if this is no use to me will I be able to get a refund Jon? Forgot the sump washer as well!! Doh.[:I]
