MOT Query

Post by Northern_Mike »

I've looked in the testers manual , and I'm still trying to work out if it's a failure if a rear door won't open from the inside?

Berlingo rear passenger door doesn't. Doesn't bother me, as I have the child lock on anyway, but the internal link in the door is broken.

Opens fine from the outside. I don't want to go and spend £70+paint+vat for a new handle assembly and pay someone to fit it *before* the MOT if it's not a fail. I want to know what else it's going to fail on first, ISYWIM..

Cheers

Tricky one. I would think that a door has to be capable of being opened from both sides under normal circumstances, but the child lock does 'override' this. If I had known earlier I could have asked when Gracie was having her partial MoT (and she has passed, so she has another year on the road!).

If You See What I Mean...

i.e. I don't want to go and spend a fortune on a new door handle and assembly only to have it expensively fail on other stuff, which it might well do..

Found it :

6.2 Seats and Doors

Section B, note b: Drivers and front passenger door must be able to open from inside and outside the vehicle.

Note C: Any other passenger door must be able to open from outside the vehicle.

That's that covered then. Still, it probably would be nice to get that sorted out for the future (in case of MoT changes, or when you have passengers on that side).

I probably will at some point, but with those rear doors, I always end up opening them from the outside for passengers, as most of them appear quite hard of thinking when it comes to opening a different sort of door (push button at forehead level, pull door back).

I believe a new door lock assembly is about £80, but it comes unpainted. Some chap in Poland sells the pin that's broken separately for about a tenner, but my success with door internals is very limited indeed, and I would end up making it far worse than it already is.

Work at mot station and as far as I know only front doors must open from inside. Cars may have child locks switched on and tester not allowed to mess with.
