It's weird. Spread thin it has that greenish LHM tint. Bit thicker and its mustard. Bit thicker than that, and it's red-ish Coca Cola.Mandrake wrote:Are you sure its not mustard ?
I'm not going to drink it though.

Re: My LHM is ORANGE o_O
You can tell if it's LHM - it has a very distinct smell.
LHM in mine was nearly that colour, not having been changed for well over 100k miles - I sort of never got around to it.....
LHM and LHS are essentially compatible from a seal point of view - the C5 front strut return hoses are the same part number as used as far back as the BX

Fixed that for you Richard, so as not to further the confusion in this thread.RichardW wrote: LHM and LDS are essentially compatible from a seal point of view
Nice find - which confirms what we thought. They're no more different really than going from semi-synth to fully-synth motor oil...RichardW wrote:the C5 front strut return hoses are the same part number as used as far back as the BX
I wonder if LDS could be used in an LHM car like a Xantia with any improvement in fluid longevity ? Not that I'd want to chance it (long term) when it's more expensive, at least not until LHM becomes unobtainable, then we may have no choice...

Re: My LHM is ORANGE o_O
Make your 'new' Xantia even happier and clean the two filters in the LHM reservoir head - be very gentle with the nylon gauze, it is likely to be brittle with age. Brush gently with a little clean petrol (will evaporate and not contaminate the LHM) using an old SOFT toothbrush. DO NOT use a compressed air line!
Make sure that the largest pipe (the uptake to the hydraulic pump) makes a good seal on the stub of the reservoir head. This stub is only plastic and the 'rubber' hose gets hard with age, so it's better to push the hose over the bulge to where it was then pull back slightly before putting on the clip.

Here's some old LHM I took out of my Activa, complete with bits (!)

I'd not worry too much about yours to be honest.

It actually had a consistency of a bad pint of bitter when it came out! I guess then the car was 12 years old and had 95k on the clock and it had never been changed.
