206 hdi rear axle

Unread post by xsaras4ever »

Has anyone managed to rebuild one of these at home - including the shafts ?

We have done Xsara axles but we use our home-made press.

The 206 axle is reverse of the Citroen - looks like you need a hydraulic puller to get the shafts out - unless you can push one shaft into the tube and then push 2 out together ?

The 206 axle can be done in situ. To remove the shafts make a puller using a length of threaded bar. I used 25mm high tensile with standard thread. Pare down one nut so it will just fit inside the axle. A piece of 1inch domestic copper pipe can be used as a protector sleeve. Do not weld the nut into the shaft but deposit a ring of weld round the inside of the shaft. The same nut can be used to couple 2 pieces of bar together if you cannot get a long enough piece for reassembly. I could only get 1 metre lengths. Look at the video here it explains all http://www.ruville.com/en/all-about-us/ ... highlight/
This guy also has some good tips but doesn't replace the shafts

I just used a tape measure to get the torsion bars correct.

206 hdi rear axle

Perfect , a great posting , thanks.

We have a tool to compress the rubber cone suspension on the old minis and it looks like we can use that as part of the solution.

We will use some stainless-steel threaded bar as its generally stronger.

Many thanks.

See attached pic. Home brew kit on a budget. Yes it works. I just use washers. Molybdenum grease and more leverage rather than buy the thrust bearings as used on the Ruville tool.
I wouldn't recommend stainless steel. 8.8 or higher tensile is better. A lot of threaded bar is not rated at all. It is just a soft mild steel. Most engineering suppliers carry high tensile threaded bar.

Thanks again.

We went to our local agricultural shop. They have the black high tensile stuff.

We are going to give the axle a go soon and will let you know how we get on.

Cheers for now..

Sorry to drag this up, but did you get round to doing this axle job in the end, and if so how did it go? I've currently got a rear beam in bits sat in the garage & the shafts look OK (as were the bearings, before I drove them out!) but I may yet fit new shafts for peace of mind.

Sorry - no we didn't.

A good axle "came up" for cheap so we went that route.

It still ticks around in the brain as a skill to learn though..........

Same here, the shafts are good on the "spare" axle & car's coming together now but it's still something I may look into, using the scrap axle as a guinea pig, in future.

Yep , same here.

Xsara , ZX and Pug 306 axles are a doddle , so doing the 206 is a bit of "unfinished business" for us.
