Cor! A Hacker Mayflower - almost as iconic as an H Van :-D Thanks Neil!

Was it in use or just an ornament?

Hacker Mayflower!

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

It was in one of the little rooms in the café but no one was listening to the home, light or third service :) and I didn't look to plug it in!

That picture is waiting there should an "I-spy Old Radio's thread be started, and it must be worth at least 50 for an unusual spot.

But does the 60's qualify as and old radio? Bit worrying really because if it does , and the Hacker Mayflower was the latest thing in my infancy, then what category does that put me in :)

I collect Wirelesses from the 60s Neil and I consider them old enough. My special interest is in early valve VHF wirelesses and most of those are early 60s although there are some 1950s sets with VHF. I have one dating from 1955... A real XM of a wireless.

VHF (or FM) wirelesses are still very usable today although many only tune between 88 and 100MHz as it was much later that the segment 100 - 108MHz was released to broadcasters. It was previously used by the police. As a kid I used to listen to them...

VHF only sets like the Mayflower enjoyed a brief popularity in the 60s when VHF was still quite a novelty. Light Third and the Home Service marked on the dial date it before 1967...

I'd be happy to put a gallery of mine in a separate thread if there's interest in this subject...

Ron and Arthur

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

I quite like a bit of diversion while the catalogue of HVan spotting stalls. Like the good old Hacker Mayflower. A quick delve into the ever reliable wiki, revealed that Ron and Arthur Hacker set up the company in Maidenhead in 1959. That brought a smile to my face. With names like that they could have ruled the East-end with a rod of steel. Not many babies called Ron and Arthur now. :) Still to their great credit they chose to make radio's in a little town by the Thames

Image

Prior to this Ron And Arthur set up dynatron, and all in all appear to be deservedly revered in their field

Timmo, I was just in the process of putting up another Citroen H Van which spotters may see out and about. Its GemBurrito but guess what-it has had a ford engine put in it!!

Now I am quite prepared to award a token 49 for a spot of gemburrito with the 1 point docked for the ford engine, but an LDV Devon conversion-Big Chief I-Spy says its not even close! and there is no pictoral evidence to support the claim.

Details of the ford transplant can be found here

2cv's and HVans

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Looks like 2CV's and HVans make good partners.

Earlier in the thread there was the

The 2CV Shop at Sutton Veny, Wiltshire doing a bit of dabbling in Citroen H Vans.

2CV Shop

and now I discover that up north ( well Bradford to be precise) we have

2CV City

Of course Bradford is the deep South for me, but I may just pay "2CV City" a visit next time I am down in Yorkshire.

The H Van is a wonderful blank canvas for a nice paint job, and I think I am drawn towards the two tone schemes. Here is a nice pair from 2CV City, I particularly like the yellow one with a white roof.

and I did like James' (Hell-Razor) Reading Ice Cream van.

2 min 21 sec of irrelevant entertainment

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Found this on a link from 2CV-City

Just a bit of irrelevant amusement, while H-Van spotting stalls

Yes its a Triumph, but I had one of those once upon a time!

The front hinged bonnets/wings were a great idea for accessing the engine, but mine did rattle a bit!

10 points if you can identify the music.

Hall of the Mountain King

Post by NewcastleFalcon »

Thanks James a well deserved 10 points for that, I was heading completely in the wrong direction.

Its a very familiar piece of music no doubt used on countless adverts and TV programmes, but I was thinking Peter and the Wolf at the start.
Then I was thinking it has to be a Russian composer.

But no its a Norwegian-Edvard Grieg. It would have taken me ages to stumble across him.

I think the Hall of the Mountain King has been adopted as Alton Towers theme music.

Silly "fact" from Wiki

British group The Wombles included a short version entitled "The Hall Of The Mountain Womble" arranged by Mike Batt for their 1974 concept album, Keep On Wombling

Will anyone admit to buying that!

Thanks

Was the theme tune for Manic Miner too.
