MOT due in 2 weeks time but the list of jobs is getting longer not shorter. Did an oil and filter change and then did the rear arm bearings last weekend not due to the Citroen lean but because of the knocks and the strange wear pattern on the rear tyre. This is the second time on a Xantia I have seen this tyre wear effect without any obvious wheel lean, on the BX the / \ effect was very pronounced.
Anyway, while I was doing rear arms she suddenly developed a bout of incontinence and stated leaking a significant amount of coolant while I was running the engine to get the suspension back up, and this on top of an LHM leak which is also on the list.
Further investigation this weekend seems to show that the coolant leak is somewhere around the area where the fuel filter bracket attaches to the engine. As far as I’m aware the fuel filter is not heated and looking at pictures of HDi engines (thank you ebay) the only place I can think it is coming from is the core plug – see below.

As to the LHM leak a good degrease and wash around the engine bay has lead to the discovery of 3 or 4 leaks to go with the one that’s developed at the rear nearside cylinder since last week, so that’s 4 or 5 to look at.
The rear one is straight forward, damage to the rear cylinder rubber boot so that will have to come off again but I’ve got a couple of spares and even a new one is less the £10 from Citroen.
There are a couple more leaks which I think are very small and have been around a while leaving a possible leak at the steering ram and another one somewhere above the gear box (a significant amount of LHM is running down and dripping off the gearbox) that I’m damned if I can find. I’m losing LHM at the rate of about 100 ml per 100 miles and not an obvious amount when the car is ticking over. If it’s from a return pipe, suspension or steering, then I suppose it’s going to be significantly less when the car is not moving. So the hunt goes on.
Oh, and to cap it all, when I’d had enough and when to lock the car the central locking suddenly wasn’t working. The alarm and clock were off as well so suspected fuse 25. Sure enough it had blow, whether it was due to my engine washing or not, 10 amp fuses shouldn’t just blow so that’s another one more thing to worry about.
I guess it’s going to be a long haul and I haven’t even started looking at ball joints, light bulbs, cv joints, gaiters, etc. etc. etc. Currently at 306k miles, perhaps 350k was/is a tad optimistic.
