I need to have a chat to the Bank Manager (AKA SWMBO) I'm hoping that once the lead comes I can get the lexia on it and have a better idea of what the problem is, I'm off from next Friday for the weekend, so I'm hoping to be able to strip the switch out and see if I can spot anything wrong, like a broken wire or something simple that's easy to fix......

I had an idea before, I'm going to disconnect the battery tomorrow for a couple of hours to see if it will allow the ECU to reset..... it's just a thought..... it probably won't but it's worth a try. There's nothing to lose.

I'm also going to try and get it up on ramps over the weekend to see it I can see anything from underneath, maybe a lose or damaged wire, as well as to check the starter connections, bedtime read I Nguyen this week is the BoL, for all the help that is........

I've had no word back yet about a possible gearbox switch replacement so it looks like I'm going to have to take this one out and try and see if I can sort something else out, worse case scenario is look for another box or the unthinkable......

I'll just have to wait and see.........

It's annoying but nothing 2 10 min fixes won't sort.

The relay mod is an easy one to do and will sort any problems from when the starter just does one click and doesn't turn the engine over. My XM has it done as that used to be a PIG to start, now, on the button, every time.

The multiswitch on the gearbox is sooooo easy to change. I'd be surprised if it took very long at all. We had to do it on Liam's V6 (Now Mikes) and I seem to recall I was doing something quick on the lathe while Liam changed it. (Mike, if you're reading this, your car has the relay already done)

As for wiring it runs down by the cambelt and joins onto a plug next to the alt which goes to the starter motor. White (If it's the same on an XM)

I wouldn't bother tracing it yet though, sort out the relay and multiswitch first as they are the cause of 95% of the problems.

As for a multiswitch. Team WFA have a V6 engine and box sitting with Paul at the moment. You are more than welcome (no charge) to the switch from that gearbox.

Chris and the WFA team, I thank you all for this gesture from the bottom of my wallet........ I will speak to 'Yoda' later.......... sorry Paul, but it did make me laugh............ :rofl2:

Now I need to find out about this starter relay fix, it's only happened a couple of times but I want to get it sorted whilst I can before the show season starts, I'm taking I'll find it somewhere on Jim's blog............ Kettle on first and then try and find it....

In the meantime, I've got the battery disconnected for a couple of hours, lets see what that does....

the relay is quite simple really. you use the normal starter wire to operate the contacts on a relay that sends 12v (from the battery) to the starter solenoid. it takes the solenoid loading from the ignition switch from say 30 amps down to 100ma. (figures off the top of my head but the difference in loading is huge).

Sorry but the ECU reset will make no difference, on a Xantia it's all good old fashioned relays and contacts that make the starter work (or not)

I know that more modern cars have the ECU operate the starter but not on these ones.

Quick update, reconnected the battery and all is well again, got me thinking though that it could be an electrical issue holding the switch in gear, anyway........ we'll see how long this lasts in the meantime I'm off to order the bits for the starter mod.....

Well, four weeks after reporting all was well with the gearbox and tonight after sitting all day in the station car....... BLAM......

Off I set in drive, thinking nothing of it until I get out of the car park, and she won't change up..... I get round the corner, move the gear lever from Drive to Neutral and then Reverse and yes there's to double clunk back....

Tomorrow I will take the battery off again and see what happens.......
