A dodgy in tank fuel pump will not cause running on. Running on is caused by a faulty regulator and I was told that by a dealer mechanic .. so like me Peter you still have a dodgy one of some kind .. They obviously get faulty in different ways. Still didn't like the sound of file ings in your regulator..

No, neither do I Paul, but I have changed the tank pump and the filter so hopefully will not get any more, I also know now that I have a good spare HP pump so I think I am pretty well covered.

Problem solved! (I think)

Today I removed the filter from the original regulator, this is the one that would only run for a few seconds.

It is not easy to get off as it is crimped onto the inlet pipe so I carefully ground it away being careful not to damage the pipe. The construction is slightly different to the non filter type as the filter also locates the two 'O' rings that seal the pipe to the pump. There is however a groove around the end so I looked out my box of tiny circlips used on video recorders and found one exactly the right size, I then gave it a good wash out and fitted it to the car.

It started instantly, ran smoothly and stopped instantly when switched off, the second time I started it the 'limp home' fault disappeared. I took it on the same 15 mile trip as before to Tesco in Axminster to get a paper and it now drives 100%, the engine light is still but no speed or power restriction problems.

Knowing what I do now it is not necessary to remove the filter completely all that's needed is to grind the end off so the fuel can get in.

It seems virtually impossible to clean the filter as you can't even see the holes, although that would be my preferred treatment.

The one I bought is obviously partly blocked as it goes into limp home with it on, cost me £35.00 but I think the information gained was worth it.

The EML light should go out after a while, when the ECU determines the problem has been resolved. I can't tell you how long this will take, though.

OK thanks. It took a couple of starts before it went out of limp home but hasn't come back since.

That's OK we got it sorted. I think the only really positive indicator of a blocked regulator filter is the 'running on' when you switch off, as I see it the restriction to flow causes the pressure to remain high enough to keep the engine running for a second or two. Poor starting could be caused by a number of things, not least the battery or starter although one regulator I have causes it not to start when hot! That one doesn't have a filter - probably why.

I knew about the blocked gauze causing running on. I put that on here either on this topic or on my own blog.. but was fully aware of it.

my last two regulators both the cutting out one and this one that works have both got the holed ends.

Not necessary John, As I found with mine, ALL my regs had the same issue causing the car cutting out!!

So all the ones you could be getting could also ALL be buggered! It was luck that my current one is fine so I have ordered a new one now its confirmed what the real cause was!

I took the fuel filter off again today but no sign of metal particles, I only changed it a few months ago - still going OK though. :-D

Warning lights gone off today, performance much better, only downside is it doesn't start as quickly, before it was almost instant now it turns over 3 or four times before it starts - not a problem, just an observation.

Just a guess (really, I do mean a guess), but now you have a clean filter (or none) in place (as opposed to a clogged one) it could be that fuel is now able to flow back into the tank when the engine is off, whereas before its' path was impeded by the clogged filter.
