C5 2.0. Hdi keeps stopping - again!

Post by Peter.N. »

The initial cutting out on hills problem I cured by changing the oil :? Its been fine for a few weeks, now it cuts out randomly, I have replaced the in tank pump which is running OK but when started it will run for a few seconds and then stop, leave it for a minute and it will start again - and then stop, I can't even drive it out of the yard.

Any suggestions or will I be forced into getting my Lexia going. Have changed the fuel filter by the way.

Paul

I think it's similar to your fault - I suspect what is happening is that the ECU is stuggling to control the rail pressure, and trying to wind out the regulator till it gets to wide open, but rail pressure still not under control, so it stops the engine. Should flag a fault for regulator at stop or something. If you remove the regulator Peter, you may find that it has got some crud on the end of it - this may be enough to stop the fault, or you may need to replace. Would need to see the Lexia output - did you get yours to work??

Hi Paul and Richard.

Before I fitted the lift pump it would sometimes start and stop immediately, other times it would drive for a while and then stop but will all ways start again after a minute or two, since fitting the pump it will only run for a few seconds, half a minute at the most so it won't drive.

I fitted an HP pump and regulator last year as it was getting more and more difficult to start, it was OK after that and even now it starts instantly, but then cuts out.

The engine light is on and its in limp home mode but its been like that for ages, still plenty fast enough for me. Another thing it does is run on after switching off but only for a second or two.

I still don't have my Lexia working, I have tried reloading the programme but unsuccessfully so far, the computer kept saying the unit wasn't plugged in, it was though and to prove it the light was on.

I'm getting to old for this :? :?

Running on, that can be caused by the pressure regualtor on the end of the pump as richard has sugested.

I had this on a Xantia, before I had a lexia, and I was pointed towards the regulator. I swapped it and it sorted it out.

The ECU could of picked up more faults, once the engine light is on, you wont know if it has recorded any more...

OK Paul, I will try changing the regulator, I tried one before I changed the pump so with the one on the old pump I should have a couple to chose from.

Info above was gleaned from the link taffy posted in his thread about his HDi that wouldn't start: http://www.aftermarketonline.net/Techni ... experiment

Doesn't give a pin out of the rail pressure sensor though....

Thanks Richard, interesting article, I will keep it for reference if the sensor replacement doesn't work and until such time as my Lexia does.

Hi Paul and Richard

You were right about the pressure sensor, as the sun was shining today I changed it and it works, it also stops when you turn the ignition off and its no longer in limp home mode - but it now won't start when hot which was the original fault when I changed the pump, the sensor I changed before that was the rail sensor not the pump one, I can only conclude that this sensor was the cause of the original problem so I didn't need to change the pump. :x

There are a few 2.2 sensors about but can't find a 2.0. for much less than £100, is the 2.2 the same?

i dont think the fps is a very good design it should have some sort of gause at the end of it...i think that what ever the sensor is covered with(some sort of glue or something)may overtime fail and leak into the electrical part :( also it takes alot(1000 bar +!!) pressure...as for my problem my ecu was GIVING the fps 9v signal on pin 2 which couldnt be explained but if you read that post above that vehicle also had a 8volt signal and it was the ecu at fault...im thinking that these ecus have a sell by date now as all our cars are around same age and mileage and the ecu is right next to the cooling system tank which overtime MUST effect the ecu internals...or damp steam...the fps pins should read...pin 1 earth(no volts to check switch your multimeter wires round and check u get 12v) pin 2 0.5v-5 v in respect to pressure of the fuel...i think at idle it should be around 1v+ and pin 3 should be the sensors power supply of 5v which it shares with other sensors...hope that helps you understand it a little better :)

I found that secondhand one Paul after I had posted, I sent him an email to make sure he heard the car running before removal as I already have two dud ones. Has been a very educational morning though, I now know at least three faults they can cause. :)

You wanna take a look at my blog Peter in the blogs section for my Xantia hdi. Go to page 18 of it and see what info I have added about the hdi 2.0 .? You might find it rather interesting or over the head..

A lot of useful info there Paul, the circuit diagram is good if I should need it but I hope not. So far I haven't needed the Lexia but I must try and get in going in case I do.
