XUD vs HDi
Now the HDi has been out for a bit, are they better performance, economy and reliability wise than the XUD?

The reliability of the basic engine is very similar to the XUD9 since it is really an evolution of it, i.e. same bottom end, new head and pistons, much in the way that the XUD9 was an evolution of the XUD7.
Whilst you get problems with the fuel pumps, you lose the head gasket troubles and starting problems of the XUD (i.e. air leaks and glow plugs).

The compression ratio on an XUD9 TD is about 22:1, On an HDI it is lower at about 18:1. Lower compression ratios mean lower temperatures and pressures, the common rail system also contributes to this with pilot injection. The engine also produces less waste heat.
All in all the head gaskets last longer.

I have also noticed a significant added advantage with the HDi engine in that the oil doesn't load up with contamination from partially burnt fuel/carbon as the correct amount of fuel is delivered however heavy the right foot is; even if you floor the accelerator at low speed there is virtually no black smoke as the engine winds up to speed. This means that the oil keeps cleaner for longer.
