XUD vs HDi

Post by Rob Marshall »

Now the HDi has been out for a bit, are they better performance, economy and reliability wise than the XUD?

Better fuel economy, definately better performance. However you could argue they're less reliable as failures have cropped up with low and high pressure pumps. The engine itself seems to be just as good.

Noise and vibrations were also considerably reduced on the HDi.
The major evolution is, however, on fuel economy.
The XUD only wins in reliability.

Is the HDI as good on ease of maintenance though? more high tech electronics at the heart I guess!

Not really any different to any other modern car. The electronics are fine, if they die they usually die completely so repair is simple - replace them. As with modern petrol engines there are more sensors so expect high milers to need a new MAP sensor for example.

The reliability of the basic engine is very similar to the XUD9 since it is really an evolution of it, i.e. same bottom end, new head and pistons, much in the way that the XUD9 was an evolution of the XUD7.
Whilst you get problems with the fuel pumps, you lose the head gasket troubles and starting problems of the XUD (i.e. air leaks and glow plugs).

The car probably comes with a temperature gauge!

Oddly enough it does!! A temp gauge that is!
Stupidly I'd bought a temp gauge for the BX and never fitted it - I got muddled up over which sender to attach it to - Oh well -what's done is done

The HDi is the better option in any circunstance:
- For lower mileage users since chance of malfunction is low.
- For high mileage users because driving pleasure and fuel economy savings cover eventual aditional costs on maintenance over the XUD.

The compression ratio on an XUD9 TD is about 22:1, On an HDI it is lower at about 18:1. Lower compression ratios mean lower temperatures and pressures, the common rail system also contributes to this with pilot injection. The engine also produces less waste heat.
All in all the head gaskets last longer.

I have also noticed a significant added advantage with the HDi engine in that the oil doesn't load up with contamination from partially burnt fuel/carbon as the correct amount of fuel is delivered however heavy the right foot is; even if you floor the accelerator at low speed there is virtually no black smoke as the engine winds up to speed. This means that the oil keeps cleaner for longer.
