In the middle of taking an XUD to bits and found this:
...the other 3 are perfect and look like new. This was the cylinder where I had a glow plug snap off in the head. I wonder if some debris has fallen down into the cylinder The engine did have a small amount of blow by, I had put that down to the crappy fibre head gasket it had fitted, but perhaps this was the reason. The middle ring on the piston was slightly stuck as well.
The piston crown shows signs of damage:
Will this need to be machined?

Re: Will this need to be machined?
Bugger. I'll take that as a "yes" then? If I get it machined, will I need all 4 machined, or just the damaged one? Then new piston rings I assume? Where's my cheque book......

I'm not sure you can sleeve them, then again it could be machined out a bit and oversize pistons fitted I guess. Not my area.
Andy.

Re: Will this need to be machined?
I think what I'm going to do is source a decent bottom end. Would a DHX be a suitable donor for a DHY? I can't think why not?

Re: Will this need to be machined?
I think so and you avoid the (slight) risk of the DHY 'concern'* I think the DHX is the earlier unit ie pre 97. I'd have to double check that.
*Andy's personal conclusion on that 'concern' was N/A rods fitted to turbo engines.

Cheers Andy, look what I found:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FIAT-DUCATO-B ... 2a2e42a25c" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
...bit of a bargain I think. The Ducato uses the XUD DHY engine as far as my research indicates. I have read of the DHY "problem" but my understanding is it's only engines made in certain years? It's of no consequence anyway, the engine is getting uprated rods as part of the top secret project

Re: Will this need to be machined?
looks like the reconditioning was just a jet wash off and a coat of black paint,
if it had bin re/conned properly they would have machined/skimmed the top of the block.
you can still see the imprint of the old gasket
