When I have helped out at BBQs, we used pre-cooked meat (cooked a few hours beforehand), waited until the coke was white, and then turned the meat regularly. Done properly, you are just grilling the meat, adding the finishing touches. Cooking from raw requires a lot more care and attention.
If you want to do corn on the cob, get it fresh with the leaves left on, and a couple of inches of stalk left. Turn it regularly until the outer leaves are blackened, peel them back, and enjoy. No butter is needed.

Re: It's not a French BBQ, but what the heck?!
I started this thread as I wanted praise for me innovative (not!) use of the bricks to hold the grille above the fire basket!
Actually, I really like this basket; I just need a better grille to hold above it.
But actually I think I'm pretty good at doing most foods on BBQs, but avoid at all cost chicken drumsticks! Notorious for being raw inside.

Tim, I have to say that, grill apart, your barbie is absolutely tremendous and a great piece of innovation and lateral thinking and making use of what was available.
Bet you didn't expect it to go to two pages though

Nope, I just thought that noone actually bought one of those shop things that have four gas burners, built-in ovens etc., and were just cobbling things together.
