I have spotted that Aldi are going to sell Sky remotes next Thursday. These will come with batteries. I will bet (not a lot of money, enough for a cuppa!) that the batteries are Duracell. If so, do NOT use Duracell batteries in the Sky remotes. They will burn out the carbon contacts in about 3 years time. I was told this by Sky engineers when I operated out of the same depot as they did. Remotes supplied by Sky when they install the equipment will have generic alkaline batteries.

I think the Sky man was either pulling your leg or didn't know what he was talking about James.
What carbon contacts for starters?
Duracell batteries have the same voltage as other alkaline batteries.

On the back of the button membrane there are carbon contacts. When a button is pressed the carbon pad contacts a pair of gold contacts on the circuit board. What I was told was that, over time, the higher power (not voltage) of the Duracell batteries will slowly burn this off. It gets to the point where some buttons need to be pressed hard to work.

I know that you believe the Sky engineers were taking the mickey out of me (and yes, they might have been). However, I have seen a failed remote, and the carbon pads were shot.

It's more likely he didn't know what he's talking about rather than being malicious.
Components only draw what they need though, and even an old zinc battery can provide more current than a TV remote would draw, so all batteries provide the maximum power that the remote can use.
I would suspect he's going by the commonly mistaken belief that power sources push current rather than it being drawn.
I see this a lot on mobile phone forums relating to chargers, where people mistakenly believe that their 2A charger (really just a DC power supply) will only run at 2A and therefore blow up their phone, rather than the charger which is actually inside the phone just drawing the mA that it requires.

EDIT

Done some quick digging, looks like this was an excuse used by customer service for faulty remotes way back in 2005 (oldest info about it I could find).
Gillette/P&G were even contacted by a member on one forum and responded that they were rather unhappy with what Sky was telling people as there's no way their batteries could cause the issue.

Normal service is resumed. Lidl is doing some car bits and bobs. I have the axle stands, and used them innumerable times;
