car had done 95k, maybe something to do with the gear selector part that needed changed? the release bearing obviously also have some scoring on it also, i was also able to pull it apart, friction plate was worn but still had a good few thousand miles left in it yet.

Don't know, but that's how they usually look, just before the bearing gives up most times.

as mentioned i could pull the bearing apart.

yeah, you can often pull them apart even when new, depending which design they are.
