I think that the reason for allowing cars with self leveling suspension to have fixed HID lights is because the attitude of the car should always be correct (barring suspension problems, of course). When a car goes over a bump the headlight angle changes momentarily, but this is noticable even on good self adjusting headlights. I believe VOSA have taken a sensible attitude on this, otherwise they would require all cars with HID units to have some way of always being correctly (and instantly) adjusted at all times, even when hitting a pothole.

Maybe in other countries self leveling headlights are only acceptable.

My son bought a 2004 BMW 525 in July. When the car went for an MOT last week, he found that an after market HiD kit had been fitted. There was a bulb out, and he had to get a new set sent at a cost of £30.
When the bulb was fitted it was still not working. The mecanic found that it was a dodgy connection.
He said that MOT stations had NOT been told to fail HID kits this year, and that discussions on the legality were ongoing. The car passed the test.
Seems there is still a lot of confusion over this.
Rick.

I think in order to make it "legal" and a good point of arguement with VOSA a manufacturer should have produced a car with Xenon's (HIDs), without an automatic system built in.
To my awareness no manufacturer has done so.

Even my Mercedes CL500 which suspension is miles faster reacting than the C5 H3+ (I thought it was slow... until I took to a dealer a frw years back to do a test on the pump ... has anyone seen a CL doing a Rodeo test, I was happy not being in the car lol)
