odd switch on AX diesel

Unread post by 3ps »

Hi,

I have a 1995 AX 1.5D

I recently had to change the heater blower, and to do so I loosened the entire dash, and took the fusbox out, and took the blower down into the footwell.

It was VERY tight. In doing so, I damaged a toggle switch that was BEHIND the dash, down near the fusebox. The cable ran from the ignition area, to the switch, and out the bulkhead into the engine..... and into a "thing" at the front of the engine, an unwieldy metal cylinder which had the accelerator cable attached to it and lots of other stuff. Not sure of the exact term.

Anyway, seeing as the switch was behind the dash, it looked like an aftermarket installation, any idea what it could be doing? TBH it looked like the item in the engine should always have had a wire there, perhaps something broke and the toggle switch was a botched fix or something... I dunno.

It wouldn't be an override for the glow plugs would it???

Thanks.

Meant to add... while removing the blower I damaged the switch and it's definitely not working, but everything seems to work as normal.

Might be an immobiliser fitted after market by a previous owner.

Would need to see a picture of the item in the engine bay you do not identify and the switch area too.

At a guess its either a manual control for the blower motor (although these don't suffer with the burned ignition switch problem as far as I know) or possibly something simple like an immobiliser.

The latter seems more likely to be honest given its partly hidden away too.

Yes a hidden switch link to the ignition does sound like an immobiliser and I obviously broke it in the OFF position, luckily!

Will report back if it causes problems.

I only ask as I have been having starting probs recently and I thought it might be a glow plug timer thing or related. I'll start another thread on that.
