Xantia trackrod replacement.

Unread post by mirafioriman »

Last year the MOT man commented the N/S track rod was slighly worn and would need replaced in a while. It's now coming up to MOT time again and when checking the car over I discovered a bit of play in the N/S which turned out to be from the trackrod inner joint.

So found out on here how they come off and set to it. Struggled to get the rubber off, ended up ordering a new one and butchering it but it came off in the end

Then removed the track rod. Special tool? Yes a big long chisel and a hammer :) Came off OK.

New one arrived, went to fit the track rod end into it and guess what? Yes, it was a later one and the threads were the wrong size

That was the only one they had so had to order one to arrive next week. So had to put the old one back on for now (with loctite so it doesn't work loose).

The good news was that the exhaust back box was in stock and fitted! So the exhaust should now pass the MOT and looks much better.

Back to it on Monday when (hopefully) the new trackrod will arrive.

I shudder a little when I have to replace track rods or things like that, they always seem to apparently weld themselves together in my experience. Glad to hear your experience was much easier!

Yes they can be awkward. However I find the hammer and chisel method works well on many things :)

Picked up my new rubber boot (actually came in a set with the rack gaiters) and a new droplink today. Just waiting for the track rod now
