Lots of questions there
I think your problem must be the rail pressure switch, as the egr would not top it running.
Question is did you bleed it properly, as you will now have let air in if you removed that switch, and the 1.6's are hard to bleed. If you didnt bleed it, they will never start.
If it isn't ths, you need to get onto ome diagnostic tool, to read live data .
It's worth remembering that a fuel pressure switch cannot usually be bought separate from the rail, apparently due to the possible ingress of dirt.
