Yup, that's what my 2004 Picasso 2.0HDi (Bosch system) made on the rollers at work t'other day. I popped it in as I suspected it wasn't running at full power, and I was right.

At lower revs it feels fine and drives as I'd expect (although I've never driven any others). But after 1500rpm, or about 40% throttle opening it just goes flat. It does still pickup, but really really lazily. You can here the turbo spooling and there are no fault codes other than EGR valve (which I'll get on to in a mo) and sometimes a glowplug timer unit pops up. You need to bury the throttle to get up hills on the motorway!

So far I have ruled out:

Brake switch - I thought it was a bit of a (very) long shot but somes on the Picasso site suggested it.

Throttle cable tension - likewise the above.

EGR valve - I blanked it off tonight. Runs a bit smoother and generally feels happier, but the original problem is still there.

I've cleaned the MAF. It looked fine, but I know this could be an outside contender.

Air filter isn't blocked.

Turbo wastegate actuating rod does move so not seized. It's spring loaded but moves smoothly around 1-1.5cm.

Turbo boost pipes appear to inflate as engine is revved (though not by much).

No apparent boost leaks. Turbo spools up nicely, but admittedly does get a bit whooshy after 2k revs, rather than the whistle it initially pipes up with.


I'd like to measure the boost to see what it's pushing out. Any ideas? Fitting a boost gauge looks trickier than it did in my Activa all those years ago!

Me too. I cleaned mine, made no difference but a new MAF certainly did.
Try and borrow a known good one for comparison before buying.

Yep, I'd say MAF too. Easily tested with a Lexia. See about 500 units of airflow at idle quickly rising to about 700 - 800 as you open the throttle. You may see the output staying nearly constant throughout the rev range with a poor MAF...

Id go with the MAF too, they dont often/usually bring up a fault code in my experience.

However one I replaced was with a cheap one and that was no better. After fitting a genuine one the car was transformed.

Apparently loads of fakes on the market so buy from a main dealer. Was the gas mileage good on 55bhp?

Maybe MAF is the next route then. Ideally I'd find one I can try first to confirm it, as I know they're only £35 on eBay but the last cheap one I bought online didn't work all that well!

Economy isn't too badly affected at lower speeds, as the issue only becomes an issue when you need more speed. If you do a motorway trip it's mid 30's though, because you're nearly flat out everywhere.

i bought a genuine one from gsf, was about 30 quid cheaper than the main dealers

New MAF picked up from local factors and fitted - car has noticably improved

Going to dyno it later to see just how much, but overall the MAF has made a massive difference.

83.5bhp. I'll call that a win. It's still p**s-poor slow, but at least it's as slow as it's supposed to be!
