Nonyl phenol ethoxylates to be precise - a detergent whose use is now more or less prohibited because of it's adverse environmental effects - persistent and not readily biodegradeable.

There's a product on the shelves here, labeled "phenyle wheelie bin cleaner". Would this be anything like your Gunk of old?

in reply to OP, yes the current gunk is red and very thin liquid, its not a bad degreaser, ive put mine in an old trigger spray bottle to help with avoiding wastage,
i have to agree though, white spirit from the local wholesalers is cheap and does just as good a job! a lot of us bikers (pedal) use it on the chains as its quick and good!! but spray it on, aggitate with stiff brush and wash off and comes up nice!!!

Muc off is okay, not a patch on white spirit though!!! And a Lot more expensive at £6/L!
A quick and easy one is general All purpose cleaner, £1 for 1L in the supermarkets, very diluteable, just extra rinse as has a high salt content! ;-)

That's good to know Mark :-D Generally their stuff is very, very good indeed and gets a lot of good press in the classic world...

Their rust removal and rustproofing potions are reckoned to be some of the best Steve, especially their Dynax S-50 cavity wax... I've used that a good bit on 205s in the past....

Many thanks for all your help, I just thought i had been ripped off! the stuffs so nuch like diesel!
All I want to do is clean up around the pump now the leak is fixed, for the MOT.
I can get celouse thinners for £4.5 for five lts, that works well but evapourates too quick.
Its cheaper than petrol. I`m very tempted to throw some in the tank!
