A quick update as it's late and Jim and I have had a rather long day, we have done so much head scratching today that we are both now bald

Long story short the timing belt was found to be at least one tooth out, removed the belt and re-timed the engine correctly yet still the engine ran very rich.

Going through the sensors fitted we suspected the fuel pressure sensor was the wrong one, checked its spec against Citroen manuals and discovered that it was a 3 BAR one rather than the specified 2 BAR, checked this with a fuel pressure gauge which confirmed that to be the case, fitted the correct pressure sensor (found lurking behind the front bumper as normal ),,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,still the engine runs rich

The strange thing now is that the Lambda sensor will not oscillate as it should which means that the sensor isn't monitoring the mixture correctly, we did see it do this earlier in the day so we know it can operate correctly so the next task is to give the car a quick trash to see whether that will clear out soot from the exhaust/sensor, if not I'll remove it and give a a good clean using a blowlamp. Current is being fed to the Lambda and all the other sensors correctly, the MAP sensor tapping onto the inlet manifold has been cleared of excess crud to ensure an accurate reading so it's now time to sleep on it and attack the job again tomorrow.

Throughout the day we have had two Lexia's, an exhaust gas analyser, two breakout boxes, a seem gauge and a voltmeter all taking various readings from the car, it looked more like Formula 1 rather than a 17 year old Citroen

We called it a night at 11pm with Jim finally leaving for the hour drive home at midnight, well done Jim and thank you for your help

All i can say is thanks chaps, i didnt expect both of you to be working on the old girl, especially to that time of night, your help is truely appreciated and maked owning old bangers not so daunting.

Good luck with it, seems she is in good hands, the last 6 years and many ££££££s have been spend to no avail, it would be fabulous to have it driving like she should again.

Rear spheres and radiator are on the shpping list for the future as is a new lock set.....

I've only just got up and come to life again Tuesdays fun with the Turbo CT breaking in Nottingham and then the mammoth session Richard and I had on your car yesterday Tim just about did me in Still, all excellent fun and very, very enjoyable

We really did scratch heads and my woolly hat has holes in it But we learned a lot from it...

We didn't check Adam but as the engine runs so sweetly it's unlikely there's a problem of great significance there but if the problem is not resolved then that'll be on the menu for the next checks. It really does run too well though to be anything serious - it's just that 5% CO reading that's the headache... We were lucky to have a CO meter to hand and that tool is a godsend for this sort of work...

Two new rear sphere's now fitted, I've checked the compressions, all even at around 13 Bar and following an Italian tune up the lambda is now oscillating correctly which has brought the emissions right down to what appears to be an acceptable level for the MOT. I'll discover more about that at 3.30 this afternoon as it's booked in for a test then, so altogether now cross fingers/toes and anything else you think may help
