The right sphere?

Unread post by tomsheppard »

My last BX estate used the rugger ball front spheres.
My current TZD is a little confusing.
N45388 looks suitable but the 400cc GTI sphere is listed by GSF as being right.
BX DIY tells me that estates use the 500cc sphere.
Jon, what do you think?

I have been sold 400 cc GTI spec spheres for my old TZD too but my newer TZD had larger ones, very comfy but I prefer the stiffer ride from 400s, perhaps its an estate car thing (I have a good pair of larger ones spare if needed)

The consensus was/is that BX Estates use the 500cc spheres, but if the Estate is a TD or TZi then the smaller 400cc GTi/TD spheres should be fitted to give a slightly stiffer ride in view of the extra "performance".
Of course 500cc spheres can be fitted for a slightly better ride.

Tom Isn't the difference the turbo? I have GTi spheres on the front of my DTR Turbo and know non-turbo does not use these spheres.
I eventually came to the conclusion that that was where the GTi spec ended and fitted estate rears.

Thanks. I didn't know that performance was an option on diesels- any chance of a part number?

Hello Tom
The spheres fitted to the TZD front are the GTi spheres and this is correct. I fitted replacement spheres all round shortly after aquiring the car.
My previous BX was an early 1.9TRS and this had the large volume front spheres. The front of this car was considerably softer than the estate (but the rears felt similarly soft - can I say that ?) but the trade off was a very wallowy ride even at relatively low speed.
The TZD with correct spheres gives a far softer ride than the Xantia I now run which is TD fitted with NON TD spheres.
One final point is that you may also be disappointed if you fit the larger volume spheres as (this may be a point of contention) I believe that the current large volume spheres are not as the originals, that is that the damping is not as soft as the original Cit spheres of the 1980's.
good luck

Thanks Mark. I'm reckoning that all is well with it and certainly it all seems to work ok. Car is now in daily use and looking very clean and tidy.
