if you post the last 8 digits of your chassis/VIN No. i will get you the correct OE part No., which you can aim at the factors to cross ref,

I was the owner of this car before Jim, and purchased the alloys off Vince.
I've pm'd him this evening asking what car they originally came off, as I'm now wondering if the width is too great for this particular version? :?

Jim. Just received this p.m. reply from Vince. I'm sure he won't mind me posting it:

they were off a Xantia and categorically will not be the cause of the handbrake cable problem on a Xantia. The common reason the outer "shell" of the handbrake cable wears out is it rubs on the small metal loop it passes through in the wheel arch when the handbrake is activated.

Even if you stuck 205 section tyres on those alloys they still shouldnt rub ther handbrake cable...

Check if the handbrake cable is correctly routed as it shoud be nowhere near the outer rim of the roadwheel

The only difference between the steels and alloys is the thickness of the wheel.....as alloys were an option from the factory any steel equipped car would need to be "safe" to go out on alloys if the customer ticked that option on the purchase sheet if that makes sense

Hi Folks,

I have read in the past, but can't remember where or what car, but it was definitely Citroen's.

If the cables are crossed over at the centre of the car, ie "RH front to LH side of lever" etc.

This will then take up the slack in the cables, and resolve the problem.

I can confirm that the car is currently on Jims path, jacked up with the front wheel off, and the problem is driving him nuts.
It's all illogical. :?

I'm about as much use to him as a hole in a space suit too.

Handbrake cable touching tyre

Unread post by jimmydod »

Hi all I think I have found the problem it is as follows, Took ok old cable off noticed a very pronounced kink about a foot from brake lever end (handbrake lever that is) fitted new cable as per old through all the loops tried cable ok worked turned wheel rigiht then left cable touched tyre as when it turns cable has to float moving in and out. Took cable off and rerouted leaving out last two loops tried again and cable floats in and out ok through the last two loops and does not touch the tyre. Will run for a couple of days then check that it has not touched tyre, and let everone know if it is a success. Can only assume that other loops have been bent in the past and it has not allowed the cable to float, pulling cable out on a l/h turn trapping it and on a r/h turn causing the tyre rubbing problem.
Many thanks for all the suggestions and advice from all you contributers.

Kind regards Jim
