Its odd, I forgot about the lack of hills down there until I went again a couple of weeks ago. Very odd! Good cycling area

Somehow the scenery looks a bit bare without hills.

...well that depends if you get stuck behind numerous lorries, tractors, crop sprayers and combines!

Some of the roads are terrible though (really uneven and bumpy) - don't know how some people live without a Hydropneumatically suspended Citroen - no probs for us though.

I find the main drive over there (from up here) boring if im honest, long, straight, flat and mainly single roads, congested with people driving much too slowly and speed cameras. The only slight highlight is a roundabout every so often

or a chance overtaking opportunity when the speed cameras are not looking.

By the looks of those pictures and the names of the roads, Devon looks the place to be if your an Activa owner! Or maybe Scotland ...

Im yet to find somewhere which hydropneumatic suspension is not needed

There are some nice roads around here - there's a fairly new road near the 'Black Cat' roundabout that's good for some 'enthusiastic' driving - dad had well over 60 x2! out of a CX GTi Turbo 2 on the way back from the CXM one the year.

Right then, the XM is now off the road and up on axle stands ready for its mini restoration.

Bits to do:

Done Fit cambelt kit and water pump
Done Fit Aux belt
Done Find source of aux belt squealing - tensioner
Done Replace drivers electric window cable
Done Exhaust is still sitting far too low
Done Sort out the windscreen washer jets
Done Replace accumulator
Done Replace anti sink sphere
Done LHM leaking from hydraulic pump
Done Solder dry joints on the plip (Plip and RCL box replaced)
Done Make the blower work
Done Fix the climate control
Done Lines out on the dot matrix
Done Replace dash bulbs - Airbag/Dipped beam light is out
Done Engine overrun - injection pump issue (Something to do with the fuel running back to the tank issues, not half as bad after replacing a few hoses)

After only driving the XM for two weeks I can positively say that my particular Xantia is truly gutless and I've been spoiled. Unless of course there is an underlying issue.
It is nice to be back behind the wheel of the Xantia though, like an old dependable friend. Its a much more sensible size for darting around in and it feels more modern inside.

Would an extra 20bhp in a heavier car really be that different. Obviously torque will be increased but still, by enough to warrant a noticeable performance gain. Im surprised. The 2.1TD seems on par with the 2.0HDi 110 for performance. Then again it should be ...

Your Xantia didn't seem to go too badly on our trip around Wales. Virtually no smoke and Im sure we had some brisk acceleration too.

More modern in the Xantia you say, interesting.

Very pleased your getting along with an XM, I thought you would, they are truly great cars.

Chris, I've just thought about it and I've realised my point is a little invalid. I had a car full of people in the Xantia on the run today

The torque is what does it though.

That might well explain that then Kev.

I think the figures suggest the Xantia TD I a little slower than a 2.1TD Xm, but not by an awful lot.

Some nice and not so nice jobs to do there, should be a good little knowledge earner

It's the torque that makes the difference Kev...

I noticed it when I ran a 2.1TD and 1.9TD. The 1.9TD felt like it had had lost the turbo after the 2.1TD. The 2.1TD is blessed with lots of low-down torque but looses out on revviness and go at the top end. Exactly the opposite of the 1.9TD...

Pumps. Speak to me about the ESOS valve job... I've dismantled an EPIC and it's not a rad job...

I have a slightly different take on the power thing! I find my xm to be painfully slow compared to the xant, and a joke compared to the cx!
I think something must be rather wrong, and im sure it has to do with the sreaming noise when the turbo tries to kick in!

I'm sure you'll get to the bottom of it eventually!
I've seen people write about these booster dumper valve gauge thingys on here so there's got to be a way of working out why the boost psi isn't a multiple of the hydraulic system pressure minus the total amount of tread left on both the off side tyres.
