Wheel knocking

Unread post by 411514 »

Ive just changed the drop links on the c5 for the mot, all well, however when i went to drive it there is a loud knocking noise when the wheels turn. As speed increases the noise becomes more frequent its definitely the drive rather than engine, and im guessing its driveshaft related but i havnt a clue what or why, i didnt touch the driveshafts only the droplinks, if anyone has any ideas as to where to start any suggestions appreciated, its a 2003 2.0 hdi vtr if that helps, cheers sam

When I changed the driveshaft on my C5 I had to disconnect the bottom ball joint. As a result the hub assembly could swing through more than its normal articulation and when I put it back together there was a knocking sound at wheel speed when I reversed.

It turned out to be the bracket with a slot in that guides the handbrake cable had bent slightly and as a result was catching on the wheel balance weights on the inside rim.

A bit of judicious "tweeking" with a big screwdriver cured the fault.

did you swap front and back wheels, a buckled wheel from the back might clip something on the front

thanks for the input guys, you were spot on Paul-R, it was the handbrake hose guide catching the wheel weight on each rev so thanks very much for the tip, glad it wasnt anything more serious, cheers sam
