Hi,I've noticed a hard rattle coming from the crank pulley area of my Xantia HDi when it's idling,it lessens as the revs rise up a bit.I'm concerned that the rubber bonding might be separating from the metal.
Looking on Ebay I saw there are now solid pulleys available for the HDi.Anyone know if they can be retro fitted? Would an XUD pulley fit? I've got a few of those lying about on old engines...

Just had the same problem with my HDI, fitted a one piece with no problems. Don't know if an XUD type can be fitted.
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec

Even though I had a pulley go on the Xsara last summer I wouldn't fit a solid one. The dual mass type perform a useful function (unlike the flywheels IMHO!) as they absorb some of the vibration from the engine
I suspect that you would have to consider changing the timing belt more often as well as, although it isn't cushioned directly by the bonded rubber, it would be stressed more.

The so called solid pulley is still a damper pulley, so there will be no issues with fitting it.

Do you have a link for this one-piece pulley? I don't see how it can dampen harnonic vibrations without being dual mass.

Here's a link to one complete with photo, Citroen now supply this single piece pulley under the part number of 0515.V6 for my HDi, so if Citroen specify it then I presume that a single piece pulley is OK.Paul-R wrote:Do you have a link for this one-piece pulley? When I replaced the failed original on mine I was in a rush so didn't pay too much attention to the replacement. My guess is that it will be made from 2 parts and somehow rubber bonded together. Thus allowing differential movement between the 2 parts to perform as a harmonic damper.
One way or another it must be a damper pulley otherwise the crank would be at risk and engine vibration would be noticeable.
The original design obviously had problems, but having said that mine lasted over 170K miles, so maybe it was the failure mode rather than longevity which was the issue ?

Difficult to say from the heavily branded photograph but it doesn't look as though it's NOT dual mass to me.
The one on the Xsara had covered about 160,000 miles so I don't see it as a weak part. I suspect the neew type is just cheaper to produce!
