Intermittent poor starting
Moderator: RichardW
Came home and tried to start the car. Wouldn't start again so I checked the 12v feed to the plugs and it was fine. Finally got it started again. Phoned the indi and have taken it back and left it at his garage so he can try it from cold in the morning.wotwot wrote:would'nt it be an idea to take it back to the indi and ask him to check the new glows, maybe a duff connection somewhere.

OK, here's the update for those interested. The mechanic reckons that I was getting voltage to Plug 3 but not to any others which confused him a bit, but by the process of 'well what else could it be?' plumped for the rail joining the plugs together. Admittedly I wasn't convinced but it has started perfectly every time since (touches wood). He reckons he has changed them in the past but it definitely was rare.
Anyhoo, there you go....for now.

Its a possibility, however remote, was it the one that the lead was connected to that was working OK?
I had a similarly bizzare problem a little while ago on a starter motor, that was intermittent, to cut a long story short, the lug on the end of the power lead was clamped firmly betwwen the nut and the stud but was only intermittently making contact, it appears that the surface of the lug had oxidised forming an insulating layer - or maybe semi conducting.
First time I have ecountered that particular problem in over 50 years!
