Xantia 2L HDI 2000 reg, rattle

Unread post by nat »

Hi

I seem to have something very wrong with my car :( I'll try and give as many details as possible.

there is a very loud rattling that is coming from the engine bay somewhere on the aux belt and the belt itself is spitting bits or rubber every so often,

also when looking at the little window into the aircon fluid it seems very bubbly and inconsitent and the aircon buttone has no effect (very different to how it used to look).

the power steering is coming and going and feels pulsey when driving.

finally, the battery light comes on for a second or so every few seconds.

the car lifts up although a little slower than normal and the ride and brakes seem fine.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The Aux belt drives your aircon compressor, hydraulic pump (steering/brakes/suspension) and alternator.
Get the belt changed ASAP.
While it's off check the belt tensioners for any play and replace if required.
Also check that you pump, compressor and alternator for any play incase they've rattled themselves loose.

If the belt goes when driving, best case scenario you lose suspension and power steering but your accumulator sphere has enough residual pressure to enable safe braking.
Worst case: bits of belt fly into your cambelt damaging that and the engine, your accumulator sphere is flat so you lose brakes and slam into an oncoming school bus sending 70 kids off a bridge to a firey death.

on that engine it has a dual mass pully on the crank that wears out, check it out NOW, but yeah you'll def need a new belt

Can we have a definitive answer, please, regarding Dual-mass flywheels?

Is one fitted to Xantia Hdi's? Either or 90 or 110 or both?

{{{There are recent contradictory postings on this}}}.

My understanding is that Xantia Hdi's didn't get the DMF but did get a DM crank pulley.

I believe that ^^^^^^ to be correct.... HDi have DM Pulley NOT DM Flywheel ...

On a side note DMF's are a sack of Poo Poo ..... Best you can do with em is WELD the Bastids together .....(Around the edge)

Done it on Transits, Range Rover Diesels & BMW's ....

WHOEVER INVENTS a method of Splitting them apart & replacing/refurbing the Springs & Bearings WILL MAKE A FORTUNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have just NEVER understood WHY they are NOT "Splitterble"

I had all these, turned out to be the crank pulley,as mentioned.Oh and it knackered the belt quite badly, but didn't break.
