Xantia Estate Tailgate Lock

Can anyone help? I have had an intermittent rear tailgate lock working and not working

- ususally sorted by repeated locking and unlocking. Today it stuck in the locked position and I managed to unlock after crawling in the back and prising off the plastic bit (advice elsewhere on the forum).

OK - so I pressed on, removed the trim and membrane to reveal the motor and mechanism. The motor seems to be working fine - moving in and out but the actual mechanism - bit of a complicated looking system of rods doesn't seem to be working

.

I have applied plenty of WD40 and will recommence activities in the morning.

Has anyone had similar - is there something I need to do or are we looking at a new lock/rod part?

Any help and comments greatly appreciated.

Not solved the problem, but found it a VERY common problem!

I did free a customers off with WD 40, but the solinoids are a weakness, and use the old style solinoid from the 309 / BX days..

The same problem happens with XM's tailgate locks, in the same way!

Other then WD40, cannot sugest anything else, but just share the same experiance.

I had recently same problem which was solved with a "new" lock motor from a scrap car

It's good that you found out how to open it from inside the car.

When I got the replacement lock working I have opened the old lock to see how it works. It's heat welded (ultrasonic welding I guess) and it's not meant to be opened.

PS: Make sure that the plastic membrane is sealed well, especially from lower part, near rods.

Next moring and two and a half hours later - the car has nice aroma of WD40 and after much looking, checking, moving stike plate and generally messing about...............it WORKS!

The bit that really needed checking and adjusting was a really small part near to the bit that grabs to the bar and locks the tailgate. The part is a screw adjusted plastic "clip" which allows a metal rod to meet with the lock. When you get to grips with the mechanism it really is a bit of a dogs breakfast - I never cease to be amazed at how things are designed.

It is a bit tricky to explain but my advice is to get to grips with how the lock works - use plenty of WD40 and keep messing about!

Now for some breakfast!

A source of inexpensive door lock motors is Maplin. As far as I remember they fit the Xantia Estate tailgate despite at first sight looking different, There is also kit which gives you 4 motors for £25 or so.

The Two Wire ones Richard. The wiring is very simple, straught to the motor in the lock. The ECU reverses the polarity to effect the lock/unlock action.

These motors look just the job and are excellent value...

As Jim says, the two wire type. Again, as far as I remember, the 5 wire type is a two wire motor with an internal changeover switch so that front doors can operate the central locking. You could leave this unconnected if replacing a two wire.

Note that cars after about 2000 may use totally different door locking systems.
