C5 crushed by carwash

Surely it's the front of a C5 the car wash needed to redesign not the back?

OK, now that brought every C5 owner running, a pal of mine wants to buy
a s1 C5 estate and has a preference to petrol as he's qualified to fit LPG.
Would a 2.0i petrol be enough to lug the estate bodyshell about? Are there
any known weaknesses with these cars that he needs to worry about or is
the main grief the HDi diesel models? Which model uses the dual mass
flywheel etc...

He's even considering that local to him red Exclusive that cuts out from idle
when the throttle is applied; any ideas if this is a significant issue or
something his LEXIA/PROXIA can make sense of?

HPi 2.0 petrols have big issues with the high pressure fuel pumps, which cost around £700 for the pump alone and is a common failing. Its not a great engine and these HPIs are always very cheap (i wouldnt be tempted though).

Your far better off with a HDi, however if they need a petrol then stick with the usual 2.0 16v, which must be the same or similar to that in an Xm, same power at 135 i think. Yes it should move quite nicely, the HPIs are supposed to perform well, but a 2.0 16v would be a more reliable bet. Its the diesels which are the more sought after though, so the petrols are cheap. Why not get a V6!

Scary about the C5 in a carwash, i can see how a carwash might activate the electric button which opens the boot, though im not sure if a carwash should be able to open the hatch in its normal mode. C5s boot strusts are not the strongest and it would take some lifting to get it from closed to open.

cuts out from idle when the throttle is applied

On the 2.0i 16v with motorised throttle, it can be the butterfly spindles that need a squirt of cleaner from the inside.
The nearside end of the spindle has an open end, where the spring and whatever also benefit from a squirt.
That's at left on the picture.
Inside the grey cover is the quarter-turn motor, and there’s nothing in there that can be helped.
Picture hopefully tomorrow … the bucket’s deranged, tough the picture went in.

If you’re willing to believe it, low fuel pressure from the tank's all-in-one pump/regulator/float/filter will also cause a flat from idle …

The 2.0i 16v engine has ‘vastly sufficient’ torque and power.

they are orible things and scratch/scuff your paint to death,

although saying that i did many moons ago take a GS through one, this G had had a F**D roof ariel fitted with a signal booster built into the base,
fitted by a previous owner,

the car wash was at a F**D dealers and it ripped the ariel straight off and chucked it accross the forcourt,

I never put my Activa through an automatic car wash. I did it a few times with the red one, and the last time i really paid for it, despite it being well waxed it scuffed the hell out of the paint and took me ages to remove them all by hand.

I've owned 3 xantias and 2 c5's (all diesel), and have to admit that the Xantia was the better car to drive, but the suspension and spheres on the c5 and the general maintenance on the C5 is much easier, i only went over to C5's because it was a newer car, the wife doesnt like me having a p reg car !, she would prefer i drive something newer otherwise my old green sx xantia xud diesel would still be on the drive !

Well, I nearly said the same thing Xac! Thing is, Paul won't put up with

Thankfully Danielle is very good with finances and doesn't see the point in wasting money on a new car when we have perfectly decent old ones which cost next to nothing.

It's all about SWMBO education really, they have to have the benefits of multiple older car ownership demonstrated in practical ways...

Such as:

1. Ease and cheapness of repair (sometimes);
2. Always having a car to lend to a sibling/relative/adult child when theirs break;
2A. Always having at least one car roadworthy;
3. Being able to pick various SWMBOs up from garages when theirs go in for repair;
4. Demonstrating how enjoying older cars keeps you out of the pub/getting into mischief;
5. Doing a good Samaritan when you see someone broken down and you do a roadside repair for them using skills learned on your own fleet.

I don't mind being told what to do; anyone I trust in terms of a relationship is likely to have a good reason for their directions thus. We may debate the merits of such instruction, though!

Carwashes here are horrid. I would rather not wash the car!

I did worry about the radio aerial but no problem, it was still on the floor of the boot from the time before last!
