The day before a trip to Cornwall... typical!

New tank on order 8th October - Brilliant start

Strangely the coolant level light didn't come on... I just happened to notice a slight rise in coolant temp.
The stub which broke off was suprisingly fragile.. will be more careful next time.
Damage to wiring was contained to outer sheath fortunately.

Out of interest what did the header tank cost you, I think mine is starting to leak in the middle also.

Apart from faulty tanks, is that caused by pressure ?
My car runs with the header tank cap loose at the first stop, with no pressure or overflow.
Glycol doesn’t simmer or evaporate.

To be fair I have had a leak on it for months.. just decided to finally let go the day before my hols, I've also bought a radiator for it £250.0

Apparently plastic welding is more likely to work, it depends on the quality of the weld... it has to withstand quite a lot of expansion and contraction.

Sorry to hear that Ian, timing was a bit wasn't it

It's a good point about the pressure. Check your cap is good as I've had one (on my own V6) that would not regulate pressure and caused a dangerous tank-splitting pressure to build. Luckily I'd not fully tightened the hose that goes from the transmission cooler to the rad and that gave first.

As you say Clogzz, no real need to keep one's cooling system pressurised at all unless you live at high altitude and even though we think the Peak District is high, it's only high by Blighty standards..

£250 was dear for a rad. I bought mine for £170 after an intensive Google search. When it turned up it was of Spanish origin and claiming to be for a Xantia 2.1TD Auto

when mine went i tried to seal the edge with silicon tape, it didn't work though the pressure was too much and i got a new tank instead. but i think your idea of plastic welding would be your best bet

The plastic is of a type that does not really bond to any adhesive (I tried several).

My plan for next time is to neatly slice the tank around the seam, cut a gasket to go between the halves and then fasten it back together with lots of spring clips of the sort sometimes used to bind papers together.

I know there is a lot of pressure, but if distributed between 20 or 30 clips, I think it should hold.

Ok new cap it is then.. It was the best price at short notice, I had a quote of over £300 from one place!

My pal has just purchased a v6 where the header had split in two along the
moulding line on the midway waistline and the previous eller has glued and
then bolted the halves back together again around the wide collar at regular
15mm intervals. I say glue but it may even be resin and whilst it doesn't really
look pretty it seems to be holding up well having already covered 250 miles
in it's new ownership.

I regret not bidding for the buy it now £49 rad on ebay a few months back
that specifically only listed the v6 24v Xant - anyone here the fortunate bidder!?

Standard plumbing ABS cement can often repair many of Citroens plastic items. Spanish radiators are usually bad news in Citroen cars.
