The way I see it is this: I'm the custodian of the data only and hosting and the continuity of that hosting by way of backups is my job as technical admin. I don't own the data, only care for it. Therefore, as I see it, I (or nobody else who may have access to that data) may upload it to another forum or host except with the express permission of the owner of the data.

If Club-XM wished for a second, spare technical admin to look after the data, I'd be happy to do so.

So, if Chris ever did decide to pull the plug on ClubXM, we would have to start again with a clean sheet.

If he was unwilling to pass the database onto someone else, then yes.

If it ever came to that, I think he'd be happy to pass over ownership of the data. This very forum was once another forum and ownership of the database changed hands.

I tried to post up my latest 4HP20 stuff the other day but could not get access to the Late XM part of the forum to do it. It seems the "back-doors" only work for certain parts.

That's a good sign as it means the basic database is repairable and the real data seems to be intact.

I wouldn't like to speculate on what Chris, the person hosting the site might do, but I can only go on what he has indicated previously. On a post in the forum he previously stated that the site and its contents 'belonged to' him, and that the users had no rights to such. Whether this means he'd ever be willing to pass on the data to someone else if it came to it, I'm not sure.

Yes from the SQL output it would appear the failure is occurring when it tries to select the list of moderators for each forum from the appropriate table, which is necessary for the display of the main front end list of forum headers.
It would appear, as you say, that the main posts table is intact, which is good sign indeed. Even if the mods / headers table is trashed, it should be possible to reconstruct those manually by looking up FIDs in other tables etc, the same wouldn't be feasible with actual post data.

As an aside, apparently Chris is now back and working on the problem, so here's hoping its a quick fix :)

Hi all,

Sorry for not getting in touch sooner. I couldn't get back in until Ciaran showed us the back door route. I have tried a mass email but it didn't work.

The problem is that the messages table of the SQL database has crashed. Choosing the repair option does nothing. I have spoken to Chris and he's working on the problem as we speak. Please be patient. The data is not lost but it will prove difficult to migrate to another forum software package. The best hope is that the table can be repaired.

Searching around the net for the specific error message reveals many posts blaming the problem on MYSql5. There are a few patches posted around various websites. We'll be trying a few of those out in due course.

Since the site is entirely non-commercial we can only afford to spend frre time on it at weekends and evenings. This of course makes any maintenance and repair slower than would otherwise be the case.

Do not abandon hope.

Cheers

Hi folks

Just got back from holiday and was very surprised to see that the site was still down. As I mentioned before, most of the information providers are still available so if the worst came to the worst we could rebuild it if necessary, but let's hope it doesn't come to that.

So now I know who the Avatar is, can we have a clue about your username's origins?

"Myglaren" was the name of a popular film when I first moved to Sweden and the Myglare was the main character in the film.

The name became synonymous with slightly creepy types who spent there lives lurking around in cellars, avoiding work wherever possible and being in general a drain on society.

So, not a particularly endearing individual.

It is an odd coincidence that Mylène and Myglaren have very similar pronunciations. Only discovered the wonderful Mylène a couple of years ago, on her 45th birthday, while looking for "Dead Can Dance" songs on YouTube.

The clip was Sans Logique set to a DCD song. I thought that she was a rather odd bird and had to look deeper, glad I did.

Far more than you ever wanted to know

I'm surprised that anyone has managed install an avatar. It keeps rejecting mine.

I've tried reducing the size, using different file extensions, loading it direct, and through photobucket..........

Perhaps it didn't like my picture :?

I notice that Dean had a go and had as much success as me
