I have had a read through you V6 blog, all looks like good fun, my gearbox project has stalled at the moment, i have actualy put it back together to keep it clean and moved it back to the corner of the garage because i have to use my spare time getting the turbo XM i have stripped down and with a possible house move in the pipeline i dont want to be moving a gearbox thats in bits, that and work has been mental the last week, roll on next week with daylight till half 7 :)

If the torque converter has gone bang ( and i think this is more likely than actual oil pump failure where a total loss of drive is concerned) then i hope the box isnt full of debris :( , it seems the TC is a part that should be replaced with a box refurb which i never knew, always thought they would be indistructable untill i started looking into it all.......

Yes, it seems the lock-up clutch friction lining breaks up and fills the 'box with debris and this would appear prima-facie to be the reason for the filter blockage and oil starvation.

I'm just itching to find out... The suspense is doing me no good at all

The old oil in my 'box drained out completely free of any debris but then, the oil was changed during the period it was whining to trya nd cure the problem so I'll never know what the state of the old oil really was..

Hopefully next week, if the engine lift goes to plan, we'll know a bit more...

Likewise, my spares 'box is all back together to keep it all clean and besides, I have to make space for an engine and gearbox in my small workshop now!!!

Me too!!! along with almost every auto owner on these forums.
Interestingly i have got some cit files on the Hp18 and fault finding wise if the oil is brown and burnt smelling the answer is a new box if you went to the dealer  ,it seems if the problem is not valve block, regulator, or brake band, selector, kickdown adjustment then they just throw the box away and put a new one in..............

Strange! But I don't really understand these things.

If the worst came to the worst, I'm sure most of the contributers are still available so the information is still there, just a question of compiling it somewhere.

Thanks Citrojim and co for giving us a temporary home. :D
