Noisy air con

Unread post by reblack68 »

Car is a 1997 Xantia 1.9TD

At the weekend it started making a tinkling noise from the belt area. At idle the noise disappeared when I turned the air con on, though there was still some noise at higher revs. I turned the centre of the pulley by hand and it does feel rough so I think it's fairly conclusive.

The question is, what can I do about it? Can I dismantle the air con pulley/clutch and repair it? I don't want to replace the compressor because that would involve splitting the circuit and I wouldn't know if either the replacement or my fitting was OK until I'd paid to have it recharged.

The other alternative is to fit a different belt and bypass the air conditioning altogether, can that be done?

Thanks for that. It looks a bit complicated  I've learned of a 406 with broken engine so I might see if I can get the pulley/bearing off that, it might.

Does anybody know if I can bypass the compressor for now?
