It is possible to bypass the immobiliser without removing the pump and the armour - there's a web page describing it somewhere. Basically you smash the electronics box out on the end of the pump till you get to the wires at the back, then just fire a 12V switched feed into the correct wire on the other side to operate the solenoid.

That may work on some of the early lucas pumps (i believe some had hard plastic covers) but i doubt very much if you could break the armour off the back of a late bosch pump without doing some damage to it.

 Yes, a bit brutal but it'll work. The armour is hard and my well shatter if hit hard enough nut by golly, the potential risk of damage (to my gentle mind) is massive.

You can also remove the relevant bit of the armour with a good Dremel and that is a better idea. I could get some armour and show where to saw. Trouble is, I don't think it can be done easily in-situ :(

Sorry Andrew, I don't quite get what you mean :)
You think I could sort of half test the immobiliser to see if the code I have is the same as that stored in the keypad which was the last successfull code?

No.

Leaving the ignition on for a while only works where you've miskeyed into
the keypad and been locked out, as it sounds the case with the specific
Xantia that won't start (which is what started this thread off!! :D).

If the keypad lights aren't showing one green light but lighting red AS
WELL AS green, leaving the ignition turned on for a length of time proves
to the immobiliser system you're not likely to be stealing the car!

Anyhow, when the system does effectively reset itself, you still need to
put out the single red light by keying the correct code in to get the pump
up and running.

As it happens, I've swapped keypads over between cars due to the rubber
covering having worn off and still need the correct original code for the
Xantia the keypad is fitted to, to unlock the ECU.

Have I confused or clarified further!? :D

Quick bit of feedback, probably won't help much but i hate reading threads which don't get closed.
My dad took the car to his regular garage, they told him they checked out all the wiring etc tried all the fixes, turning it on and leaving it, disconnecting battery etc but couldn't get it to go. From this they concluded the keypad was faulty and tlod him £76 + the dreaded from citroen. In my opinion this was not necessary the right way to go, what if they fitted a new keypad and it still didn't work? Thats money down the pan. From what I read I though best option would be to spend that money getting the pump disabled. We contacted local diesel specialist they said they could do it no probs, bring the pump in its £45, we haven't had the final bill yet as the garage removed and refitted the pump plus did a belt kit whilst it was off but the car is running fine now.
Thanks for all your help.
