ZX 1.9D Clonks at the Back

Unread post by rod_f »

I know a lot of posts have been made on this one but hey here's another.
There is a lot of clonking from the back (passengers side I think but it's difficult to pin down) particularly when I go over bumps. When I do the handbrake test that I saw on one thread (pull it on while driving) I don't get any big sounds.
Now does this mean it's not the subframe bushes ?
I removed the jack from the cradle in case it was this & the exhaust seems secure.
Where should I start

I'd say a test for the bushes is simply to jack the back of the car up, via the body, so the subframe can hang loose if the bushes have become detached. Buy some bushes anyway because they fail eventually!

Probably ya mounts I just did mine this weekend.....WHAT an improvement. I now have a car that handles. Symptoms of mine were mainly violent thumping from the back whenever the car hit a bump, worse when braking because the weight shifts forwards leaving the back lighter making it even more susceptible to being thumped by the bumps in the road. Also when I applied the handbrake on a slope the back end really sunk down a lot. It still sinks slightly now but nowhere near as much I realise now it was play in the mounts. My mounts must have been really ****ged judging by the sound the back made but when I jacked the car up and let the entire sub frame dangle, wheels attached it didn't really look that bad at all.

If its not the subframe mounts, it might be worth checking that the tail gate is shutting firmly. I've had to adjust the catch on my ZX estate a couple of times. The gate shuts OK and stays shut, but is capable of moving around and clunks over bumps. Check it by shutting the gate and then try moving it by hand.
Having said that I still have a knocking from the back. I've checked the rear mounts which I had to change in Feb, they're fine, but it looks like the o/s damper is moving on its upper mount. Haynes manual in its wisdom says the bushes are not replacable, but GSF lists bushes as a seperate item. Has anyone changed just the bushes, if so any tips? Or should I just replace both dampers. The car has done 81K.
Cheers

Duncan -
I think at 81Kmiles it's a good insurance to replace the dampers - they are responsible for the car's driving stability.

Should have put this first:
1994 ZX 1.9D 84,000 miles.
Well I'm going to have a look tomorrow. I thought the mounts looked OK but maybe you can't tell - guess I should do them anyway. The rear shocks were replaced October last year by Kwikfit.
Hope the weather holds.

well that was interesting
one bush was stamped 97 & was OK but the rear one marked 92 was well knackered - replaced all 4
had a very bad time with one rusted-on lower damper bolt but got there in the end & seems to have solved the banging noises
on to the next problem !
for what its worth, standard M12 nuts will not fit the front bush bolts - the correct ones are a slightly smaller than standard thread pitch (1.25 rather than 1.75 for all you trivia junkies)

How long does it take to replace the four mounts? Not that I'd tackle it myself, but I bet some garages would charge an extortionate amount for it!

took me 2 days but I had a hell of a job with a rusted in bolt which felt like it was welded on - it hadn't shifted since new I guess (1994)
clambering around underneath in restricted space slows it all down, if you had a lift it would all be a lot quicker

Hmm...trivia junkie here[:D] never seen a 12 x 1.25 in such a place, its allways been 12 x 1.5 in my experience as opposed to the standard ISO metric coarse of 1.75 on 12mm bolts.
The only place I've seen the 12 x 1.25 on a Cit is on the wheel bolts.
Now off to find me next fix..[:p][:0]

I can't believe I was sufficiently anal to check this.
According to the thread gauge that came with my tap & die set it is 1.25.
Tested on the bolt I butchered attempting to force the wrong nut on earlier.

In my Zeus Data Chart Reference Tables it lists a 12mm x 1.75mm pitch ISO Metric Coarse thread and a 12mm x 1.25 pitch ISO Metric Fine thread. Is a 12mm x 1.5mm pitch a special?

Seems to depend where on the globe you are, USA and Canada call 12x1.5 fine and 12x1.25 extra fine.
Over here though 12x1.5 is indeed classed as special but common on french cars never the less, where as the 12x1.25 is classed as fine, odd when the difference between fine and coarsde for 8mm and 10mm is .25mm and yet for 12mm its .5mm.
When I fitted rear discs to my old 205, the caliper bolts were 12x1.5 and when I did the rear subframe mounts on my ZX they were also of the 1.5 pitch, this I know from using a thread restoring file to clean the rust from the threads.
As said I personaly have yet to see a 12x1.25 pitch nut and bolt on one of these cars though they obviousely do get fitted.
