200k in XUDTs

I have driven autos all my life really, and never had one fail yet.. Sooo, are they really unreliable? have I been very very lucky? or is this dread of major breakdowns on autoboxes just an assumption that non auto drivers all seem to have?

Auto boxes are not at all unreliable - I hope I didn't give that impression.

It's just that the std PSA cog stirers just don't go wrong, and an auto box will eventually wear its band clutches and need serious dosh to put right. I adore good autos on the road - can't be beat for driving in traffic or autoroutes IMHO.

When i drove my car when it belonged tomy Dad,it always felt a bit faster & responsive than my Xantia TD est,even though the Xantia was boosted to 110 bhp ish.It was good for the 1st week that i got it,but after having it re mapped to 140 bhp,it really does fly now.And i average 46 mpg on mixed driving.I got an average of 56 mpg from it before xmas on a long run.The Xantia could only dream of that!

Tbh,i`am put off a bit by the electronics of the engine,but there all like that these days,& i need a decent car for the traveling i do.
Overall i rate the HDI.

Also,the Xantia had 105k miles on it when i brought it,& when i sold it to SteveG,it had about 173k on it.It only let me down engine wise when the thermo stat housing went on the motorway.
I`ve now done 8k in the 406 since the end of Oct,so fingers crossed....

Most auto XMs are written off by failure of the auto box purely because in that price range a new box or repair considerably exceeds the value of the car. The manual box seems to go on forever and even if it developes a fault it can still usually be driven.

I can appreciate the case for auto's if you are continually driving in traffic but personally I dont like them. Apart from the increased feul consumption and reduced performance, I dont like the way they drive. I drove a 2.1 td auto XM and it didn't want to change gear until about 3000 rpm, making it noisey and thirsty. I very rarely drive above 2000 rpm in mine, execpt on the motorway and it returns an average of 40+ mpg with a best of well over 50 mpg. I'm sure an auto wouldn't do that.

Trouble is you guys have got me thinking - perhaps the devil you know is better, and I should fix the Xantia I have got..... Not that much money (new matrix, aux belt tensioner, radiator, thermostat, climate temp sensor - maybe £300 all in), just quite a few hours to fit it all. I can live with the slightly erratic suspension, and the £2k saving over the HDi would compensate for the £600 / year fuel saving. A 'new' HDi would probably need spheres, LHM, brake service.....

Mind you, C4 on 0% finance AND cashback at the mo. Tempted....

i'd get an auto any day, i'd love a V6 xantia on the auto box (they only come in the auto anyway don't they), as for mileages, it's a sad fact that people are still scared oh high mileage cars. Maybe the cars of 20 years ago were a bit crappy, but the newer ones are much better at holding their mileage, more people are aware of the diy jobs they can do to save money to avoid the rip off garages.

Also another thought I have is, a high mileage car won't put me off at all, as long as it's not been used as a taxi, but been used as a motorway miles car and looks WELL looked after, you tell a lot about a car's history by the previous owners.

Besides, a car with high mileage will probably have had most of the manufacturers niggly faults put right, and most components and fluids changed since new (coolant/lhm etc), so i'm guessing a 180k mile car might be a better buy than a 80k mile car, since the 80k mile car will probably have bits starting to fall off. And they usually all happen at once!

My Indy lent me a BX with about 430K on it a few times. It had a slight oil leak IIRC, but took me on an 80 mile commute happily. Not sure what killed it in the end - unless they sold it.

At the time I had a BX 19TRS (yes Petrol) which had 230K on it when I scrapped it. Still had the acceleration to embarass a fair few BMW drivers

Was starting to burn a bit of oil though, needed a new carb and I had the chance to get the 2.5 XM. I am assuming that the 70K on it when I brought it at 10 years old was legit of course...

Whenever anyone tells me Citroens don't last I just let them look at the mileage on my car and tell them how many breakdown I have (0).

Petrol or diesel?

My Indy lent me a BX with about 430K on it a few times. It had a slight oil leak IIRC, but took me on an 80 mile commute happily. Not sure what killed it in the end - unless they sold it.

My 110 HDi is a lot quicker than my old 1.9TD but, more importantly, it pulls strongly from about 1500RPM. As long as you have more than 1500RPM up there is no need to change down to accelerate.
