200k in XUDTs

Not much point to this post, just musing.....

A quick add up of the mileage we've covered in our 6 XUDT engines since I bought the first BX TD back in Feb 1998 reveals we have just topped 200,000 miles. Cars:

BX TD: 70k (Sold at 136k)
BX TD: 15k (Sold at 85k)
Xantia TD: 40K (sold at 112k)
Xantia TD: 50k (Current, 102k)
ZX TD: 10k (sold at 120k)
ZX TD: 15k (Current, 80k)

Total mileage these engines have covered was 635k. The only engine repairs required were a new head gasket in the first BX TD (at 136 when I sold it), and the first Xantia TD (not fixed, sold for spares).

Unreliable these Citroen engines, aren't they?

I'm looking to move to a HDi 110 - let's hope it keeps the trend up!

Probably throw a con rod on the way home now 8)

Impressive! The 2.1 td is the best of the bunch, I sold my last XM at 292k miles and it was still running well, a little smokey on start up, but I think it was entitled to be!

Citroen make very well engineered cars, their are few others on which the suspension joints and bushes last up to 150k as do the drive shafts, and are relativly cheap to replace when they do go wrong. They are sadly let down though by the electrics.

From what I have read though, the HDi engine is not as reliable, partly electronics again, but also issues with fuel injection and the dual mass flywheel disintegrating.

I'm with you on this one, 200k mile on my 2.1 too, no rattles, no loss of power, and no smoke!! Sure people say BMW's can do big mileages, but so can Citroen!! So nuh nuh to bmw!!

My experience with XUDs over the last 15 years tells me that given regular oil and filter changes, these engines historically pass 350K with no oil consumption at this mileage, with only the odd head gasket when coolants are not changed yearly.

Best I have heard of to date is a 305 XUD estate/van that was run up and down the country as a delivery vehicle that eventually refused to start from cold at 690K... since Riccardo researched the optimum ring pack temp window, bore wear has dropped into the noise mush on correctly designed engines that are alwaysa run up to temperature each time.

The above easily surpasses BMW diesels - evn Mercs IMHO.

Our 2.1td is at 203k now and all its had is a turbo.
At that point it had the coolant flushed and refilled anyway and has had it in the past with cambelt and waterpump changes which are every 3yrs or sooner anyway.

Dual mass flywheels dont exist on the HDI110 Xantia IIRC that was covered on here already as a possible mod for other HDI 110 engines to get rid of them and now lucas do a different setup on them.

TBH id get a 2,1td and stick to good servicing with it...

I've nothing against the 12 valve engines per se, but ALL XUDs seem equally reliable IMHO, and the mechanicals of the HDIs will probably follow suit. Good idea to dump the dual mass Fwheels at the first clutch change, and add a Bosch micro fuel filter.

TBH id get a 2,1td and stick to good servicing with it...

200k is routine, really, for an XUD as long as journeys are not too short and the oil is changed regularly. My previous BX had 197k on the clock when it was written off in an accident and my current ZX TD estate has 260k on it and uses no oil. I have sufficient confidence in it to pile in the family this weekend and drive it to Austria on a skiing holiday.
I was brought up with cars that used to be worn out at 100k, so I'm impressed with the longevity of these PSA diesels.
As far as I understand it the HDI engines are mechanically very similar to the XUD's so there is no reason to suspect that they will be more fragile mechanically, even if the injection systems are more prone to failure.

The 2.1 has a much improved cooling system with the thermostat in the radiator return, there by eliminating the possibility of air locks in the head - the cause of premature head failure on many 1.9s

I agree completely about oil change intervals. I change mine every 5k and believe that this is the main factor in engine longevity.

My Xantia TD is coming up on 180k today, it brought me home from Scotland to North Wales last night in very quick time and without using oil or coolant, my personal best was an engine with 300k in a TD BX, ran perfectly until the car rotted away.

Just out of interest how many people on here own or have driven a 110HDi?

How did you rate it?

I find mine OK but nothing to rave about, it does make me wonder what the 90 HDi is like, underpowered I guess.

I wasn't all that impressed with my HDi 110 until I had the exhaust cat replaced yesterday. I can only assume the original one was pretty clogged up inside, as the improvement now is quite noticeable. It seems to have more low-mid range torque and just more pleasant to drive somehow. Before it felt strangled, as if the air filter was blocked or something (which it wasn't).
Ideally I would have de-catted it, but I couldnt find any Xsara HDi de-cat pipes available "off the shelf", and I needed one pretty quick because the old front pipe/cat was rusted and about to fall off! I'm hoping it improves the mediocre fuel consumption a bit too. That would at least soften the blow of having to fork out £183 for a new cat

I run a Xantia 90hp Estate HDi [with 197K on the clock] which goes well enough - no ball of fire, but will wind up to 115MPH indicated on the Autoroutes - nice and pleasant to drive as well - always a joy to get into, but I have disconnected the EGR. Above the fuel consumption is extremely frugal at around 45+MPG - a good 5-7MPG better than the wife's XUD TD Xantia Estate.

I have driven a 406 HDi 110HP auto Estate, which went very well indeed - I love autos to drive on the road, but would not choose one to own as one day the box will cost serious money.

I had a 405 td with an xud and when i got rid of it as the beginning of the year it had nearly 224K on the clock and its still started on the button and didnt use any oil or water. It had a wee puff of smoke on start up but that was it. She still pulled like a train right up until the day i handed her over. Good im regretting that day. (stupid bloody garage and stupid 406).

I bought the new 406 with 154k on as i wanted something lower mileage so i could do some miles in it. Once i get it working again (stupid garage) I want to put 100k on it before i think of getting something else!
