Xantia 2.0 HDI Constant pump/motor noise like a humming!

Unread post by icedillon »

Hi All,

My Citroen constantly has this motor/pump noise whilst the engine is running, kinda getting on my nerves now. However, if you just turn the ignition on, you can here it for a few seconds and then it just goes away like a fuel pump priming. But soon as I start it, the noise comes on again and is there constantly.

Any suggestions?

Also does anybody know how to disable the annoying woman employed by traffic master?

Regards

Where does the noise come from? Front or Back of car?
As far as the women, can you not leave her chained to the kitchen sink :D

Do you have a/c or climate control? Is it that little fan behind the dashboard which pulls in air to measure interior temp and control it?

the noise is from the front, its quite a loud hum so not quite sure where, definately electrical and not mechanical. Does the hydraulics have some electrci pump or anything? Is the fuel pump on the front in this car?

I have climate control, not sure about anything related to that as it is always there a soon as I turn the ignition, cuts out after 5 secs. I then start and its there constantly!

Also, the fan speed is either low or high, no real gradual - resisters screwed?

It could be that evil little fan behind the dashboard for the temperature sensor, as suggested already. Mine makes an annoying buzzing noise as soon as I turn on the key.

I highly doubt it's the fuel pump as I was under the impression they're inside the fuel tank on the Xantia's so you wouldn't be able to hear it at all unless it was REALLY noisy.

I presume you've tried listening from OUTSIDE of the car when someone else turns on the key for you ? (To confirm whether the noise really is from outside or whether its actually inside)

Edit: just checked and on my car at least (different engine) the fuel pump is at the back. It makes a soft whining noise for about 2 seconds after turning on the key and then stops.

Simon

I think this probably is the fuel pump and / or the filter housing - there was a post about it not so long ago. When the pump starts to go, it creates pulsation that seem to amplify in the filter housing, knackering that too (or maybe there's a damper in the housing that gets knackered). My guess is if you take the cover off the engine and listen carefully the noise will be coming from the filter.

As Richard mentions I would crack open the bonnet and try and 'hone' into the area of the noise as this sounds like the fuel filter housing which are a few people have experienced on here before with the exact same symptoms.

Nope, pump in question is the low pressuire lift pump - situated in the fuel tank. Accessible from under the rear seat AFIAK.

It cant be that, the noise is defo from the front and is slightly pulsating but because its loud and of such a low frequency you cant make out where it is. Much like a subwoofer in a car

The pump is at the rear, the filter at the front. Vibrations from the pump cause the filter to make the noise. Problems with the filter can amplify the noise.
