Dead Speedo

Hi All,

I noticed last Friday that my Speedo wasn't working. So I assumed the cable had snapped.

Took the car to peugeot today to get the cable changed and they found that the cable was still intact, and that the worm drive in the gearbox had gone. To repair this they have quoted me about £240 cause they need to drop the gearbox out to do it.

Does this sound right? Is there any way it could be done cheaper as money is very tight at the moment. Cheers.

What car is it?

I had the speedo drive cog replaced on a 405 years ago, Part was £3 but driveshaft had to come out to fit it.

Cant remember total cost im afraid

Oops being a bit dense.

Its a 405 (1.9td estate), It looks from the quote that the main bit is only £2.64 it the driveshaft removal and refitting is the expensive bit at £99.75 plus another 60 odd for the rest of the labour.

The parts only come to about £40. Its all the labour that gonna eat the money.

Its the little brown plastic cog on the end of the drive shaft then.

Cheap part but its the fitting it that eats your money.

The one I had replaced had split in 2, Once the driveshaft was out the plastic cog just fell apart in to two parts in the mechanics hand.

As it's the labour that is the expensive part of this repair, then it would save a lot of money to take it to an independent specialist, where the labour rate will be cheaper than a main dealer.
