zx can't start

This sounds like a problem I had a while ago.

The starter spins but the solenoid doesn't engage the drive cog onto the flywheel.

I managed to free the solenoid (it was stuck and not knackered) with a couple of sharp taps from a heavy hammer.

You could remove the starter motor and manipylate the engaging mechanism driectly, that may do it.
