diesel leak

my 94 xantia 1.9d has developed a leak
it is coming from the top of the spindle on the pump
i have removed the arm ,spring,cable and cleaned it up and reassembled it this appears to have stopped the leak,
but if it comes back short of taking the injector pump apart i cannot see anyway of fixing it ,any suggestions and is this a common problem

Its probably a failed 'O' ring on the shaft. On the old CAV pumps you could take the top off, but dont know what pump you've got, should be 'Bosch' or 'Rotodiesel' which is CAV. If you tell us which type I am shure someone on here can help you. This is a known problem but not very common.

how do i tell which pump i have as i can't see any obvious manufactures name on it,

For 94 Xantia diesel;

1.9 Non turbo is a Lucas Pump
1.9 Turbo is a Bosch (same as mine)
1.9 Light pressure turbo is a Lucas pump
1.9 Turbo Bosch AS3 VP20 (ECU later type)

as it is a 94 non turbo 1.9d it must be lucas

so do i just take the top of the pump off and replace the seals /o rings?

I have never seen a non turbo Xantia! It sounds as though you have the simplest pump, so if it looks as though you can remove the top to get at the shaft, you probably can. I have never personaly, had one of these pumps apart, although I have worked on the DPA pump, a much earlier version, but it looks from the diagram that the top is secured by four allen screws and it seems as though the operating shafts come off with the cover. If you are taking it apart, make sure thet the top and surrounding area a scrupulously clean, you cant afford to get any dirt in it. However, before you try all that, just take the levers off the shaft and see if the 'O' ring is at the top where you can get at it.

are the o rings just standard rubber ?
is it just a case of finding one the same size or do you have to get a certain type of o ring

Its a shame its a Lucas pump, there was a posting on here showing a complete strip down on the Bosch pump recently.

I think the parts are available from a Lucas service centre (or whatever they are called this week) - no doubt all will be revealed by a call to your nearest one. There are also numerous diesel specialists who will do the job for you - probably surprisingly cheaply.
